Ericsson Sees Sony as 'Logical' Buyer for Sony Ericsson    [ 08-05-2009 20:47 ]

The constant rumour mill that is Sony Ericssn rears its head once again with Ericsson's chief executive, Carl-Henric Svanberg, commenting upon the possibility of a buyout of Ericsson's half of the company. Mr Svanberg think that joint partner Sony would be the most 'logical' choice to acquire Ericsson's 50% stake in Sony Ericsson. Whilst Mr Svanberg's comments don't commit anyone, much less Sony, to a particular course of action, and coming, as they do, shortly after Ericsson announced that it was willing to pump cash into Sony Ericsson, these comments are almost certain to revive talk of Ericsson possibly pulling out of Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson is currently the world's 5th largest handset manufacturer by market share, but it has taken hits recently, not surprisngly given the company's focus on imaging and music handsets when its rivals have been concentrating on internet access and messaging. Sony Ericsson told the Financial Times in an interview that it would focus more on high-end smartphones using three different operating systems; Symbiam, Android, and Windows Mobile. However, Sony Ericsson CEO, Hideki Komiyama, told the paper that given the current financial situation the number of operating systems may be reduced. Speculation may mount that the OS to be cut is Windows Mobile given Komiyama's comment that the X1, Sony Ericsson's only Windows Mobile handset, was "...a kind of experiment."
