O2 Proposing Revenue Share with Manufacturers    [ 07-05-2009 21:25 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Mobile Today     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

O2 UK is looking to begin implementing a new revenue sharing deal with handset manufacturers for payment of handsets. The deal would see O2 pay manufacturers 50% of the cost of handsets up front and the rest would be made up by customer spend over the life of a contract. This isn't the first time that O2 have floated an idea like this, two years ago both O2 and Vodafone pitched the idea, but manufacturers weren't keen on seeing their income taking a tumble and there were also disagreements over which parts of a customer's revenue stream would be shared.

However, O2 has had the experience of a revenue sharing agreement with Apple and O2 look to be more confident that the deal could work this time round. Mobile Today quoted one insider as saying:

"Handset volumes are significantly down for the manufacturers, competition has got really tough and there are new entrants wanting to make an impact."

The insider went on to explain that handset manufacturers were going to have to be willing to adapt to their circumstances and take new ideas on board. Steve Adler and Ian Clarke, O2 execs looking after handsets, are both said to have approached various manufacturers about the proposed revenue sharing model. One problem O2 will have in convincing manufacturers is that a revenue sharing scheme is inherently unpredictable in terms of forecasting exactly how much cash manufacturers can expect from customer spend. A source close to the matter explained:

"There are also difficulties on how you calibrate ARPU. Is it total bill or outside the bundle? That will penalise us if an operator puts it on an aggressive tariff, or if the proposition offers good value to the customer."

The feeling amongst such skeptics is that whilst the deal looks promising on paper, in the wild it may not work out quite as well as O2 hope.

Jabra Halo for Summer UK Release    [ 07-05-2009 20:39 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket Lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The UK market has seen the announcement of the world's first dual mic Bluetooth headset, the Jabra Halo. Supporting both standard voice protocols and A2DP the Halo is able to pump music into its user's ear through a suitably linked device. Incoming calls will automatically cause the music to fade out. The design is an over-head one with touch sensitive volume controls and a discreet display. Perhaps most interesting of all the headset can connect with two Bluetooth devices, with mobile phones autopairing.

The headset features 'Zirene Power Base', which enhances audio quality and 'Noise Blackout' technology for filtering background noise. The wired side of things features a micro USB charger with battery life claimed to be in the 8 hour area for music playback and actual talking; standby time is said to be 13 hours. When it goes on sale this summer the Halo will sell for approximately £99.99.

Pocket Lint have published a rather nice wee guide to Bluetooth 3.0, which many of you may find of interest. For those of you who aren't aware Bluetooth 3.0 is the enxt iteration of the ubiquitous short-range data transfer technology seen in everything from mobile phones to photo frames. The new standard will increase data transfer rates and possibly greatly increase range too. It's a concise guide Pocket Lint have assembled that should answer most people's questions about Bluetooth 3.0 as well as explaining some of the underlying concepts. Check it out here.
