Microsoft To Ditch 'Windows Mobile' Brandname    [ 30-07-2009 18:55 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Phone Arena     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Windows Mobile is not long for this world it seems ... well the name isn't at any rate. Microsoft are reportedly set to ditch the brand name 'Windows Mobile' in favour of a new brand 'Windows Phone'. The change in naming convention will apply to iterations of Windows Mobile from 6.1 onwards. For their part Microsoft are saying that the change will help consumers because they think that customers are apparently confused by the different version numbers of Windows Mobile. Instead all customers will need to know is that their handset is running 'Windows Phone OS'. Some might think that Microsoft's reason for the name change is a bit flimsy, but it does have practical benefits in streamlining how the OS is viewed as well as perhaps drawing a little more attention to it in the short-term.

The Inquirer, the source of the name change speculation, is also reporting that Microsoft are set to release a new video of their latest mobile OS this Friday i.e. tomorrow. Whilst there has been no official word on an updated video there is still time for such an announcement to be made if indeed one has to be made at all. A new video will be eagerly anticipated by industry watchers and customers alike to see how far Microsoft has progressed given the highly competitive nature of the mobile OS scene in recent times.

Unlimited Tariff War Heats UP: Virgin Gets In On The Act    [ 30-07-2009 18:39 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Just yesterday we reported that Tesco Mobile was set to offer an unlimited SIM only tariff in the UK for £30 per month and we mentioned how other networks might follow suit. Well we haven't had to wait long as Virgin, another UK MVNO, have come out and said that they too will be offering an unlimited tariff. However, there are some crucial differences between the two deals. The first thing to note is the price difference; whereas Tesco is charging £0 per month Virgin will charge £65 per month. Why the higher price? Well Virgin will be offering a free handset with their deal, either a Nokia N86 or a Samsung Jet. Tesco's tariff is SIM only so there is no handset.

Another crucial difference is in how each network defines 'unlimited'. Of course no British networks defines unlimited as the dictionary does, all putting in place fair usage limits. Tesco's limit is a monetary value of £500 while Virgin has opted for the more traditional route of placing limits on the number of minutes etc. In this case the limits are 3000 minutes, 3,000 texts and 1 Gb of data per month. This may very well be the start of an all out unlimited war between British networks

New LG Chocolate Gets Official: Arriving Q3    [ 30-07-2009 18:36 ]

Author: Serge Novikov     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Chocolate fans will soon be able to get their hands on the new version of the best selling handset as LG have officially announced that it will go on sale sometime in Q3. Even better news is that it is apparently set to be released in 54 countries although LG was tight lipped as to exactly which countries. The original Chocolate was one of LG's most successful handsets and many have been looking to a successor for the popular handset. This time around the new Chocolate, or the BL40 to give it it's official designation, will pack some decent firepower. The handset continues LG's concentration on touchscreen handsets, which has seen the manufacturer release a number of touchscreen handsets already this year including the Cookie, Renoir and Arena.

  • Screen: 4 inches, 800x345 'Real VGA', 21:9
  • Connectivity: HSPA, WiFi, GPS, FM Transmitter
  • Storage: 355 Mb
  • Camera: 5 MP

As you can see from the aspect ration, and the pictures of course, the screen is rather long. If nothing else it gives it a unique look and thus a unique selling point. The fact that it packs in very respectable features and specifications shouldn't do anything to hinder sales either. LG have seent heir fortune simprove over the past few years with a string of handsets that have proven popular with customers such as the original Chocolate and the Cookie. With the release of this updated Chocolate LG will be looking to see it take them forward to increasingly challenge their arch-rival Samsung.
