Palm unleashes large touchscreen Pre handset, with full slide-down QWERTY keyboard, running on webOS    [ 09-01-2009 12:09 ]

Palm have just announced their latest mobile phone - the Pre, which has a large touscreen, and slide-down full QWERTY keyboard. The Pre is Palm's first device to utilise the company's newest OS - the webOS. The Pre brings with it some interesting features. For one thing, thanks to Palm Synergy technology the Pre will grab your Google, Facebook, and Microsoft Outlook online calendars, and put them all into view at once. What's more, the Pre can locate contacts of yours, in different locations, and organise them all in one place. Also, the Pre sports multitouch functionality, much like Apple's iPhone. Multitasking on the Pre is somewhat different than what you'd be used to - you can move open applications around the screen, and throw them off of the screen when you're done.

Connectivity wise, the Pre has you covered, as it features Wi-Fi, GPS, and Email connectivity. If you get a text message, or a calendar notification comes up, they'll as notifications at the bottom of the screen. The Pre features a Universal Search facility, you can start typing on the QWERTY keyboard, and the phone will search contacts, applications, Google, as well as Wikipedia, for your query. Going back to the Synergy feature, your chats with a given person (be it if it started via an SMS message, and continued as an IM conversation), are grouped in a single chat-style view. It's worth noting that the Pre's entire User Interface is based upon the WebKIT Browser, so it's very open to third-party developers, unlike the Apple iPhone.

The Pre is set to retail for around $500-550, in Europe, before subsidies, and for $399 on US network operator Sprint's network. Technical specifications of the Pre are as follows:

  • Connectivity: GSM and 3G EVDO
  • Display: 3.1", 320 x 480 pixels, HVGA resolution, multi-touch
  • Camera: 3 megapixels, with LED flash
  • Memory: 8GB internal memory
  • Extras: Wi-Fi b/g, GPS, physical slide-down QWERTY keyboard, accelerometer, Bluetooth 2.1, with A2DP, MicroUSB connectivity, 3.5 mm jack
  • Dimensions: 59.5 x 100.5 x 16.95 mm
  • Weight: 135 grams

Google Maps recieves an update, makes finding Points of Interests less of a hassle    [ 09-01-2009 09:54 ]

Google's mobile version of the company's Maps software has been updated. The new updated version makes searching for various Points of Interests easier than before. This is because, before this updated version, for instance, if you queried, for instance, Burger King, Google Maps would search for an address contaning the term Burger King. However, now, apparently, just keying in the term Burger King, at either the start, or end point, Google Maps will locate actual Burger King stores for you. There's no need to update your Google Maps mobile application, as Google has operated the changes on its servers and not on the mobile client.
