According to DigiTimes, Intel has unveiled the details of its Shelton’08-based low-end notebook platform. The platform adopts Intel’s single-core Diamondville CPU with a core frequency of 1.6GHz, 533MHz system bus. Besides there is a 945GSE chipset supporting DirectX 9 graphics, single channel DDR2 memory, Wi-Fi 802.11g module, USB/PATA port SSD. The notebooks will be equipped with a 7- or 8” display.
Shelton’08 platform consumes around 8W, which stands for 3-4 hours of battery life. The notebooks will be listed for $300 to $500 depending on the specification and design. Currently, Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology have already started product development, while Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Acer will follow later on. Reportedly, Samsung Electronics has filed patent for SyncPaper trademark. It will be applied at “devices with e-ink displays”. At the same time we have a long list of would-be e-ink products – computers, displays, working stations, phones, digital multimedia receivers, MP3-plaeyrs, TV-receivers, e-calculators, notebooks, CD/DVD players, PDA and mobile phones.
Probably Samsung plans to launch its own device based on e-ink technology. It might be e-book reader (some models have already popped up). Or the company will choose less traditional application taking into account wide range of would-be devices. We can only guess and wait for the official announcement.

iRiver has introduced its Tablet PC called eBook. However this is just a concept and its specs haven’t been specified yet. The idea is that the display isn’t a LED one, but based on e-paper technology. The company notes the display is a color one. The eBook can recognize handwritten text (essential for hieroglyph input). The device involves wireless connection for data transfer. There is no info so far whether iRiver would implement the eBook idea.
