Nokia morph phone concept    [ 26-02-2008 23:55 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's Morph nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Centre, and England's University of Cambridge, has been put on display, at The Museum of Modern Art, in New York, USA.

Morph is basically a concept, showing how mobile phones could be in the future – stretching, and flexing the phone into different shapes. But, ultimately, the technology inside the morph concept shows off transparent electronics, and, self-cleaning surfaces.

Hopefully, elements of the Morph concept should be available in handsets, within the next seven years, obviously, in high-end devices, to begin with. The nanotechnology will hopefully allow for integrating complex functionality at a low price. Learn more about what the Morph can do here.

Users of Apples iPhone, and iPod Touch, will be glad to know that these two devices now have a new firmware update – version 1.1.4. However, little is known, in the way of what the latest firmware version offers, but many are hoping for the long-awaited SDK. Those who have updated to the latest version haven't reported any changes from the previous firmware – this seems to be merely a 'bugfix' release.

GiFi –new wireless high speed communication standard    [ 26-02-2008 11:31 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: The Age     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Melbourne University-based laboratories (Australia) unveiled a new wireless technology called GiFi. This is a short range technology, effective within 10 meters. However it features impressive data transfer speeds – 5 gigabits per second, it can transmit stream video online without buffer delays. The developers have already held a demo of GiFi in action. They introduced a 5-mm CMOS-chip that uses a one-millimeter antenna and consumes mere 2 Watt. GiFi works in 60 GHz spectrum and would have a production cost less than $10. The final GiFi version is expected in 2009 or later. The developers believe the new wireless technology will be widely applied in household electronics like TVs and mobile phones.

Author: Serge Novikov     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

EMOBILE, a young 3G operator in Japan, has launched preorders (effective from March 1) for the S11HT communicators with a threatening name “EMONSTER”. Other regions know this device under the name of HTC TyTN II. The operator timed the sales of the communicator to the launch of voice services in its networks. EMOBILE was positioned as the carrier of HSDPA data transfer services and thus lacked voice ones.

Reportedly, the S11HT runs on a Japanese version of Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition and is the first smartphone in Japan with GPS onboard.

Live pics of SE low-end slider    [ 26-02-2008 09:48 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: SE4M     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

There is another leakage of “live” pics with a cellphone probably upcoming from Sony Ericsson. We’ve got almost no info on its specs – looking at the picture we see a slider phone dressed in metallic housing, which is compact, but not too slim. According to the source, this is a low-end handset with a 1.3-megapixel camera. Probably, we’ll hear other details at the official announcement or from the next info leakage.
