Philips has demonstrated a new Xenium handset at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Xenium 9@9j involves an interesting idea of an AAA battery backup. There is a slot for an AAA battery in the bottom. The technology called Backpower comes from an Israeli company Techtium. The 9@9j seems to be the first handset to have it inside. A representative of Philips carried out a demo with the Energizer rechargeable battery. Reportedly, the phone can last for 3 hours of talks and is expected in stores in April 08.

The China-based company E28 has showcased an Android-powered smartphone at MWC in Barcelona. In fact, the new platform was simply integrated in the existing device – the 2831. This is a GSM candybar featuring a numeric keypad, a 2.2” QVGA touchscreen, a 1.3-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi support. Taking into account modest technical details, such as old TI OMAP 730 200 MHz processor, a mere 64 MB RAM and 64 MB ROM, the device proved really good, said visitors to the E28 booth and shot a video clip.
