118 million smartphones shipped in 2007, says Canalys    [ 06-02-2008 21:40 ]

The smartphone market has grown at a fast rate in the past year, and, this is evident by data released by Canalys. Smartphones represented approximately 10% of the world market in 2007, with 60% of yearly growth, which makes them one the fastest growing devices of the technology industry. No doubt, Apples emergence into the market caused quite a media stir, plus they have managed it bite off a good market share - Canalys estimated that Apple took approximately 28% of the US converged market, in the fourth quarter in 2007, which was somewhat behind RIM's 41%, but quite a fair bit ahead of third-placed Palm's 9%. Apple were also slightly ahead of all Windows Mobile device vendors, who had a share of 21%. The top manufacturers for the EMEA region are as follows (from first to last): Nokia, RIM, HTC, Motorola, Apple, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Palm

As far mobile platforms are concerned, according to Canalys, in the fourth quarter of 2007 Symbian had around a 65% share of worldwide  converged device shipments, which puts them ahead of Microsoft (12%), and RIM (11%).

Spy pics of Motorola Z12 smarphone    [ 06-02-2008 10:32 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwiredview     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

We’ve got another leak to the Web, i.e. some spy pics of a new multimedia smartphone Motorola Z12 codenamed Scarven. Reportedly, the Z12 is a successor to the Z10 kick-slider. It packs an 8-megapixel camera with optical zoom, a 2.8” 16M color VGA touchscreen, GPS- and Wi-Fi- modules. However some sources mention a 5-megapixel camera and a touch-sensitive panel, not display. Anyway we’ll know something for sure during the official announcement. We can see three devices at the picture – supposedly, Motorola Z8 (left), Z10 (mid), Z12 (right), the latter differs from the previous models and matches the description.

A teaser video (for Motorola’s Z12) popped up on YouTube - people lugging around TVs, laptops, CDs and DVD players. “It doesn't have to be this hard” says the company in the end of the clip suggesting that we don’t need a TV set outdoors, when we can use Motorola’s multimedia smartphone. We expect to hear more about the device at Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona.
