Symbian OS 9.5 gets officially announced    [ 26-03-2007 17:01 ]

Symbian has inaugurated new version of its operating system - Symbian OS 9.5, meant for increasing performance and functionality of smartphones at keeping  production costs and development time same as before.

Symbian OS 9.5 is fully backwardly compatible with the previous versions bearing 9.x indexes. The change log includes:

  • High-performance smartphones to run on feature phone hardware, 20-30% lower RAM usage achievable, reduces device start-up time by several seconds, reduces application start-up time by up to 75%
  • Faster time-to-market, Symbian OS v9.5 introduces standardized support for digital TV and location-based services (LBS).
  • Enhanced support for built-in cameras. The 35 new camera features include support for tilt sensors, preset image enhancements, panorama stitching, and red-eye reduction.
  • Enhanced VoIP and streaming, automatic switching between 3G and Wi-FI

Pantech has announced at an exhibition taking place in the US its new handset - the C710, which is a 3G-enabled offerings for the US market.

The phone is in a fact a heavily multimedia-armed device - packing a 1.3 Mpix camera, stereo speakers and ability to transfer stereo sound wirelessly via Bluetooth, and Flash-based user interface. Apart from all that the C710 comes enabled with Push-to-Talk functionality.

From this year on the US operator Cingular is shifting to the new brand once acquired from AT&T. The South Korean company Pantech has already completed the certification of several models to be released under the renewed logo. Sony Ericsson has announced today its first tri-band HSDPA and quad-band EDGE handset - the Z750. As the maker claimes, this model ensures full speed of  a broadband connection to Internet, enables email management, posting photos in your web-blog on the go, and all this crammed into an exceptionally designed phone.

Sony Ericsson Z750 sports flashy looks and mirror-like coating on its clamshell design. The outer display is hidden and appears from beneath when you receive a call or message, or get updates from great many of sources, including Internet, push email and RSS news feed in real-time mode, that flashes through the phone's display.

Z750 is armed with Exchange ActiveSync feature and supports wireless synchronization and Direct Push functionality for email, calendar and contacts. Lenovo has introduced a new communicator for the Chinese market. This is the ET600 based on the new Windows Mobile 6 OS. The new phone carries 128 MB flash ROM and 64 MB RAM onboard. Besides the ET600 is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera and an expansion slot for microSD cards.

The communicator features tri-band GSM and Bluetooth, but the info on the wireless networking is missing. Anyway, this device will be hardly available outside China.

ELSA, the company known for its accelerators, has introduced a 1Seg digital TV tuner on SD (SDIO) card. The developer offers the new product for both PC (Windows XP and Vista) and Windows Mobile devices (the version expected this summer).

BengalBoy, infamous for its love for semi-naked girls and snaps of not announced mobile phones, has released a few images of what is believed to by another RAZR-style gadget by Motorola. As always, this information is still unofficial, thus nothing is for sure about this phone as of today.

However, as the source reports, "Motorola LAZR" as they call it, bases off Linux OS and is capable of handling email and even a lucky owner of 2-inch display. They also suppose there should be 512 Mb of built-in memory and possibly no place for memory expansion slot.
