Google rumored to be planning a mobile phone of its own    [ 19-03-2007 16:43 ]

NEW YORK: Google Inc. could be in advanced stages of developing a mobile phone as indicated by various leaks to the media about the possibilities of such a project. Sources close to the company say a low-cost, internet-enabled communication device is getting readied by the search company.

Adding credence to the speculation is a remark by a top official of the company based in Spain, who confirmed last week the company is exploring such a project. A Spanish news website, Noticias.com, quoted Google's chief for Spain and Portugal Isabel Aguilera as saying Google has investigated developing a mobile phone. She said such a project is in existence and some Google engineers are engaged in developing a mobile phone device.

Google has not directly reacted to the reports, but a spokesperson of the company said Friday mobile is an important area for the company and it is focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. She, however, ended saying she has nothing further to announce.

Some analysts, however, pointed out that such speculations about Google's plans had been proved wrong in the past. Reports circulated at one time talked about Google coming out with a personal computer system of its own. It transpired later that there was no such plan for the search major. however, the word that is spreading at the CeBIT trade fair, which is now on, is that reports about Google phone could not be wrong because some of the company's representatives themselves have said in the open about developing a phone and that it could be a mass market product.

Some sources indicated the device could be something like a Blackberry, with voice over internet protocol capability and with bare PC features. earlier in December 2006, there was a report in The Observer saying Google is interested in developing a branded Google phone. The report said the company had talks with Orange on a partnership to develop the phone, google has recently entered into a partnership with Samsung Electronics to have mobile versions of Google Apps on Samsung phones. Some observers believe this could be pre-runner to Google entrusting the task of designing its phone to the Korean phone maker.
