$10 cell phone ready in two years    [ 12-04-2007 11:45 ]

Several years in a row world leading manufacturers have been claiming their readiness to introduce really affordable cell phones. They will help spur mobile service penetration in developing countries, where people can’t afford buying a cell phone. However in practice no one succeeded much. For example, Motorola has recently launched its low-price Motofone in India, but reports indicate it has not done well.

However the situation might get much better soon. Scientists from the Lawrence Berkley Labs are currently working on a $10 cell phone proto. They are cooperating with several large Taiwanese manufacturers, including Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn), Compal Communications и Quanta Computer. If they succeed, the $10 phone may be ready in two years. Unfortunately other details are vague.

Well, the $100-notebook project can be deemed successful to some extent, so we are likely to witness the start of the $10 cell phone production in a while.

Marvell 88W8689 – Bluetooth + FM    [ 12-04-2007 10:11 ]

Author: Klimov Oleg   Source: eetimes.com     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Today mobile component makers do their best to diminish size of their products involving high element integration and SoC-components (System-On-Chip). That is a single chip represents a combo of several modules in charge of different functions.

Marvell Technology Group has introduced the 88W8689 single-chip solution that supports simultaneous use of Bluetooth applications and FM radio, and includes support for the new Bluetooth Version 2.1 + EDR features. At the same time the chip features extremely low power consumption, which can be highly appraised by mobile device makers. Well, let’s wait for the mass production of the new product.
