Kenwood To Buy Wireless Communication System of Motorola    [ 04-04-2007 21:45 ]

Author: Klimov Oleg     Translation by: Saliquincer    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

TOKYO - Japanese electronics maker Kenwood Corp. said it would spend about $84 million to buy an unlisted U.S. wireless communications system company, aiming to boost its presence in a market dominated by Motorola.

Shares of Kenwood jumped 5% on the news, which came two days after the company warned it would fall well short of its earnings forecast for the past business year due to price falls in low-end car audio products. Kenwood said it would spend about 10 billion yen ($84 million) to buy all shares of Redmond, Washington-based Zetron Inc. to bolster its communications division, which accounts for 30% of sales and is considered the company's "cash cow". The company said it has already secured loans to fund the acquisition.

Zetron develops central control systems for airline companies and communications systems for police and fire departments. It has 290 employees and posted an operating profit of $4.3 million on sales of $44.4 million in 2006. Kenwood makes walkie-talkies and other wireless radio equipment. It accounts for about 10% of the global market for such equipment used for commercial purposes, a distant second to Motorola, which holds two-thirds of that market.

Kenwood President Haruo Kawahara told a news conference the acquisition would allow it to offer clients a total package of equipment and control systems. But he said the move should not be interpreted as an attempt to challenge Motorola head on , "Because we will now be able to bundle our products I would expect our sales opportunities to increase," Kawahara said. "But Motorola is a giant and this is not really about doing something that would impact them. We are looking to establish a big presence for ourselves in this stable market," he added, referring to the market serving government entities.

Kawahara said he hoped the acquisition would help boost sales in its wireless communications equipment business by 10 billion yen in 3 years, up from about 45 billion yen now. Kenwood's group sales are expected to have totalled 171 billion yen in the year ended last month.

Kawahara said Kenwood would still be interested in forming an alliance with Victor Co. of Japan Ltd. (JVC), a struggling electronics unit of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. that is being pursued by private equity funds, Kenwood participated in an early round of bidding but has since dropped out. Texas Pacific Group and Cerberus are still in the running for control of JVC, which like Kenwood is a major maker of car and home stereo equipment.

Samsung Electronic has unveiled its plans to release 6 new smartphones in 2007 at the recent press conference held by the company’s German division. Mr. Norbert Strixner, the marketing manager of Samsung, reported that the current market of ordinary cell phones in Germany is saturated, and he noted the increased demand for smartphones in professional and customer’s segments.

The company doesn’t plan to launch smartphones lacking cameras, on the contrary, the upcoming models will be equipped with high resolution units. Besides all new devices will be powered by Windows Mobile 6 operating system. The OS version hasn’t been specified yet – Standard or Professional, thus communicators might see release as well. The devices will be arriving in the market from this summer onwards, said Mr. Strixner.

It’s still unclear whether Samsung would launch Windows Mobile 6 update for its recent SGH-i600 smartphone.
