At the current CEATEC Japan 2006 Sharp has introduced its electronics dictionary (English-Japanese and Japanese-English). The device was developed in cooperation with IBM.

The device is peculiar for its capability to recognize the speech, translate it to other language and then reproduce it aloud. That is, the user speaks in English, the gadget reproduces the text in Japanese and vice versa. In addition the initial text and translation are displayed on the screen.

The translation software was provided by IBM. Sharp expects to release the device by the end of the year with the price tag of 60,000 Yen, i.e. some $500.

Samsung SGH-i607 smartphone has been approved by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Under the preliminary info, this is a version of the SGH-i600, which will be released by the American operator Cingular.

This is a Windows Mobile smartphone equipped with the QWERTY-keyboard and landscape oriented LCD. It can work in GSM and UMTS networks, besides it supports high-speed data transfer standard HSDPA. After the approval by the FCC we can expect the smartphone will be available soon.

Wolverine Data has introduced a new media player Wolverine ESP (Entertainment Storage & Player). It is positioned as the first professional or semi-professional portable media player providing full multimedia compatibility. The player is peculiar for a capacious HDD, a multi-format card-reader and other advanced functions.

Wolverine ESP is equipped with a 3.6” LCD, an FM-tuner, 80-100 GB HDD and a card-reader for CF, MicroDrive, SD, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro and XD Card, and MS-Duo, MS Pro-Duo, miniSD and RS-MMC with the adapter.

The supported formats:

  • Graphics - JPEG, BMP, TIFF and RAW
  • Video - MPEG1, MPEG4, WMV9 and Xvid
  • Music - MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC and CDA

You can view, scale and rotate images. There is the support of image input to PC or TV screen and printing via PictBridge. There is a line-in to record sound. Wolverine ESP measures 134.6x71.1x22.8 mm and weighs 289 g. The recommended price makes up$399.99 for the junior model and $499.99 for the senior model.

At the current CEATEC Japan 2006 show Fujitsu has introduced a couple of mobile PC concepts – Turn Tablet PC and Ultra Mobile. The first one is quite a big notebook with the sensor screen, powered by Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. It is peculiar for its white backlit sensor keyboard. This approach solves the problem of dirty keyboards and the cleaning.



The second concept, Ultra Mobile, is a compact PDA-media player of original construction. According to the photos it consists of two revolving parts. The device is equipped with a microphone, a camera, several USB-ports. Well, there are no more details.

Following the development of Wi-Fi networks dual-mode cellphones with the simplified access to Wi-Fi are becoming ever popular. D-Link has announced its new series of cellphones V-CLICK. These are dual-mode phones supporting cell and Wi-Fi networking. By pressing a special button the users can switch the modes.

At the start of sales (1Q 2007) the V-CLICK lineup will support tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) and Wi-Fi. The phones do not have compact size – 105.9x43.9x19 mm. There is Opera Mobile browser for Internet work. The display features a 2” diagonal and 176x220 pixel resolution.

The battery life in GSM mode will reach 5 hours or in Wi-Fi mode – 2 hours. There is 24 MB available to store data (documents, images, music and video). We can’t definitely tell how the models will differ from each other. The recommended price makes up $599.99.
