Microsoft to promote DVB-H    [ 01-03-2006 12:41 ]

Microsoft has announced it joint to a recently established Mobile DTV Alliance. The organization is meant to promote and develop DVB-H technology (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld), which provides digital TV broadcasting on mobile devices. The alliance joins such giants as Intel, Motorola, Nokia, Modeo and Texas Instruments.

As a part of this organization Microsoft will assist in promoting DVB-H technology on the North American market. Microsoft Windows Media technologies optimized for mobile devices, for example, Windows Media Audio Professional, Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Windows Media Video were successfully introduced for mobile broadcasting last year by Modeo in its pilot DVB-H network.

Fifth Media is preparing the release of its EMXI 700 smartphone. It is powered by Windows Mobile OS and meant for GSM networks. There is the support of Wi-Fi wireless networks. The smartphone is equipped with a digital keyboard like in an ordinary phone. The details on the specs are not clear yet.

The EMXI 700 is likely to be exhibited at CeBIT show in March starting next week. Fifth Media hasn’t provided any details on the release date, however the website of VIPN (Voice Internet Phone Network), the company to release the device, suggests it will be available in 2Q 2006.
