Motorola i670: an iDEN-clamshell for Sprint Nextel    [ 18-07-2006 19:08 ]

Motorola has announced the release of a new cellphone for the American operator Sprint Nextel – Motorola i670. This iDEN-phone is positioned as an advanced solution for business users at an acceptable price. It is made in a clamshell form with an external antenna and a color 130x130 pixels internal LCD (there isn’t an external LCD).

Motorola i670 supports Push-to-Talk, Direct Talk and Group Walkie-Talkie. Besides there is a navigation system Assisted GPS. It is already commercially available. The recommended price is $249.99 or $49.99 in case of a two-years service contract.

Analysys International foresees that the Chinese Government might grant the license for 3G mobile services in the second half this year, and in 2011 the Chinese 3G subscriber’s base will reach 270 million.

According to the analysts, the 3G market development in China will pass through 3 stages:

  • 2006-2007: the networks will cover less than 80% of the country (big and middle cities mainly). The subscriber’s base will reach 25 million users, 5% from the whole mobile base in China.
  • 2008-2009: the coverage problem will be solved and the 3G-base will swiftly grow to 138 million, 25% of the whole subscriber’s base in China.
  • 2009-2011: 2G phones will be removed from the market, and the 2G subscribers will gradually switch to 3G. In result the subscriber’s base will reach 270 million, 38% from the whole subscriber’s base in China.

Think Secret website has posted new rumors on the “iPod killer” – Microsoft Zune media player. With the link to the sources from Microsoft Think Secret says that the player will be equipped with a 400 MHz processor, more powerful than required to play audio and video. This confirms earlier rumors about the gaming feature of the player.

In addition to Wi-Fi the Zune is supposed to have a satellite radio receiver and will cooperate with Urge music service (beta-version is already announced).
