Skype has released a new beta-version of Skype for Windows Mobile handhelds – Skype for Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2.1.0.53 Beta.

It features a wide list of new opportunities and improvements. For example, it’s possible to edit profile, there appeared animated icons and the support of chat, voice mail and calls divert.

Samsung to show its MP3-player with speakers and sensor buttons    [ 16-08-2006 13:36 ]

Samsung has another new model in the MP3-player lineup – the YP-K5. The player is not yet commercially available, the company plans to show it at IFA 2006 event in Berlin early in September.

The player has an original form-factor – it’s possible to plug the headphones, besides the YP-K5 is equipped with a flip speaker panel. You can operate with backlit buttons on the sensor panel.

There is the support of WMA, ASF and OGG formats, an FM-tuner and DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine). Its Li-Pol battery ensures up to 25 hours of playback on a single charge. There will be available versions with 1, 2 and 4 GB of flash-ROM onboard.

T-Mobile releases MDA Vario II in Europe    [ 16-08-2006 12:32 ]

T-Mobile operator has announced the European release of the MDA Vario II communicator, an implementation of HTC Hermes platform, also known as HTC TyTN or SPV M3100 by Orange. The device is already available in Germany and the UK, soon it will come out in Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary and Slovakia.

The operator stress the fact that the MDA Vario II supports high-speed data transfer standard HSDPA in addition to GPRS, UMTS and Wi-Fi. It is equipped with a sliding QWERTY-keyboard, a 2.8” QVGA (240x320 pixel) LCD, a 2-megapixel camera and an additional camera for video telephony, Samsung 400 MHz CPU and an expansion slot for microSD cards. The MDA Vario II is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. Measuring 113x58x22 mm it weighs 176 g.

At the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco the Norwegian company Trolltech has introduced a Linux cellphone Qtopia Greenphone designed for application developers. The Greenphone will provide an opportunity for developers of software and phones to create, modify and test applications for Linux phones on a working GSM/GPRS-device, this should speed up the launch of applications to the market.

The Greenphone will be offered as a part of a complex software development kit (SDK), it consists of Qtopia Phone Edition platform by Trolltech and a user’s interface for Linux-cellphones. Qtopia is used in more than 52 different devices from Motorola, ZTE, Cellon and other manufacturers.

Despite the company doesn’t intend to offer the Greenphone for mass sale, the device features many functions of a contemporary smartphone, which can be used by software developers.

The specs of the Greenphone:

  • 1.3-megapixel camera
  • Processor Intel Xscale 312 MHz
  • 64 MB RAM and 128 MB flash ROM
  • Slot for miniSD cards
  • Bluetooth interface

There will be a limited edition of the Greenphone in mid September. This is the first device of the open mobile device series, which Trolltech expects to release together with its partners.

Palm has offered for the Treo users and GPS technology enthusiasts its Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition. It’s a GPS package with new software TomTom NAVIGATOR 6, it can be plugged to the Treo smartphones and thus add GPS-functionality to them, including voice step by step guide, maps with plenty of objects and so on.

The main component of the package is the GPS-receiver based on SiRFstarIII supporting Bluetooth interface. It is compatible with Palm Treo 650, Treo 700w and Treo 700p. The smartphone communicates with the receiver via Bluetooth, it gets the location info and displays 3D maps stored at a 1GB card from the kit.

The GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition consists of a GPS-receiver, a storage card with the preinstalled maps of the US and Canada, a car cradle with windshield mount, a charger and TomTom Navigator 6 software. The recommended price makes up $299.
