Microsoft to release the Zune for $299
[ 14-08-2006 13:30 ]
Author: Verà Kozlova Source: TWICE Translation by:
There emerged some new info on the upcoming player by Microsoft – the Zune. According to TWICE site (This Week In Consumer Electronics), the first Zune will be equipped with 30 GB HDD and be available at $299. It is expected to be offered in 3 color solutions. I’d remind you that the price tag for Apple iPod player is in the same price range.
However Microsoft neither confirms nor denies the info. As for the Wi-Fi wireless support, distributors say the users couldn’t get music via Wi-Fi with the Zune (the process will require PC connection), but will be able to exchange songs with other Zune users via Wi-Fi.

Canalys: sales of GPS-devices in Europe doubled over a year
[ 14-08-2006 10:48 ]
Author: Verà Kozlova Translation by:
According to the analytical company Canalys, the sales of mobile GPS-devices in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) grew noticeably in 2Q 2006 breaking the record of 4Q 2005. Canalys estimates mobile devices with integrated GPS-receivers, which have step by step car instructions. The shipments amounted to 2.5 million units against 2.3 million in 4Q. A year-on year rise made up 96.6%.
The analysts believe that 2Q is a silent one for many types of consumer electronics, but not for navigation devices especially in Europe, where many users buy them before summer vacations. Companies release more and more new models, including those in new form-factors, with new functions and for wider price segments.
TomTom is still the leader with a 30% market share. Its shipments grew considerably against the same period last year, but slightly decreased compared to 1Q 2006. Garmin ranked 2nd doubled its share against 2005.
There is another point in the assessment. The mobile GPS category includes PDA, PDA with cell communication and simple compact navigation devices like TomTom GO. Well, the share of compact navigators took 87% this quarter, while the share of PDA and communicators amounted to 10% and 3% respectively. To compare, in the beginning of 2005 the PDA share fell on the half of the mobile GPS market. The reason is that the compact navigators are usually optimized to the car navigation, have more convenient form-factor and better price.

SCH-B470: a DMB-clamshell displaying two channels at once
[ 14-08-2006 08:30 ]
Author: Verà Kozlova Translation by:
The phones with DMB mobile television stay popular in South Korea. Samsung Electronics is regularly releasing DBM-cellphones with new functionality.
Today it introduced the SCH-B470 supporting S-DMB capable to receive two channels at once. There are two TV pictures on the screen. This is PIP technology (Picture in Picture), it allows users watching one channel and monitoring other channels simultaneously. However the screen isn’t that big featuring a 2.2” diagonal, i.e. you can watch two channels, but you’ll have to neglect details.
Without that function we have an ordinary DMB-phone: clamshell form-factor with the rotating screen, 2-megapixel camera. This week the Korean operator SK Telecom will release the phone. The recommended price makes up 700 thousand Won, i.e. about $730.
