Today Palm has announced a software update for its Palm Treo 700w smartphone released by Verizon Wireless operator. This update adds Windows Mobile Messaging and MSFP (Security Feature Pack), which includes the support of Direct Push technology. A free update will be available later this month, it will allow the users of the Treo 700w to have more comfortable and quicker access to e-mail, calendar events, contacts and tasks added directly with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 (without additional programs by third parties and thus without extra expenses.

BenQ has announced it completed the merger of the European and Asian units dealing with mobile products. It will speed up the process of launching products for sale in future. The units are engaged in research and development activities, defining purchase strategies and other management functions.

The new unit will be headed by Jochen Eickholt, earlier responsible for Europe and Latin America, and Irwin Chen, earlier in charge of wireless products unit.

At the CTIA Wireless 2006 exhibition Modeo, the company engaged in mobile TV, shows a smartphone with an integrated DVB-H receiver (Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld), actively promoted by Nokia. However the smartphone is developed by the Taiwanese company HTC known for its Windows Mobile platforms. Modeo hasn’t announced the name of the smartphone, so far.

  • Weight – 119.9 g

Modeo is planning to officially launch the commercial mobile TV service on main US markets, including New York, during this year. Last year the company successfully held the DVB-H network tests in Pittsburg. Currently it is implementing the network in 30 US districts, the launch is set for the next year. The new smartphone will be released during the second half 2006.

Slim solutions become ever more popular, well, Samsung (i.e. its US unit) has announced another slim handset SGH-T509. It’s a candy bar model, which according to the manufacturer, should be the slimmest one on the US market at the release in spring. The phone is 9.8 mm thick.

The model is designed for GSM networks and supports EDGE data transfer standard and Bluetooth interface. The LCD displays up to 262K colors, it’ll be comfortable to watch stream video and photos taken by built-in camera. This handset is currently exhibited at the CTIA Wireless 2006 in Las Vegas. The SGH-T509 is expected to be offered by T-Mobile operator early in May.
