Review Motorola T720i

Standard kit:

  • Phone
  • Charger
  • Camera
  • Camera case and strip
  • User's guide

Just users got used to Motorola T720, manufacturer offered its renewable version. The reason was not only to evolve a phone but remove the main shortcoming – short operating time. Lithium-ion battery of 550 mAh capacity was substituted by the same battery type of 750 mAh capacity. According to the manufacturer the phone’s autonomy was greatly extended. Now the phone has up to 390 hours of standby time and up to 230 minutes of talktime.

Our field test (Beeline network) showed that the phone could work about 3 days in case of 30 minutes of talking and 45 minutes of using other applications. The result is really great, taking into account that T720 worked only one day in case of the same use time. The new battery didn’t cause considerable increasing in phone dimensions; only the depth was increased by 2 mm. It was able to do, as the battery compartment was a litle bit deepened.

New phone dimensions are 90 х 47,5 х 23 mm and weight is 111 grams (10 grams more than the weight of T720). Because of prominent battery cover, the phone has not right center of gravity. If you lay an open phone on the table, it won’t lie on the lower part. In reality it’s not a problem but you will feel that the phone is massive. We think that it is a man’s phone to some extent.

The second considerable change is that T720i is equipped with an external digital camera. It is connected to a system connector, placed on the bottom of the phone. A special camera case and a strip to wear the phone around a neck are included in the standard kit. The camera is compatible only with T720i, it can be connected to T720, as both phones have equal connectors, but this camera won’t work with it. These two phones have differences not only in software but hardware as well, T720i has another type of Flash. As a result firmware of T720i isn’t suitable to T720.

It’s very easy to switch a camera, just select a necessary menu item from the menu. Camera application is Java application, as a result, amount of memory space, which is available for other Java programs, was halved: from 1 Mb to 500 Kb. Phone display is used as a viewfinder. You can rotate a camera at the angle of 180 degrees, what allows to take picture of both yourself and environment. Camera settings are ascetic. There is a special setting to shoot in bad lighting conditions; also it is possible to change frequency (50 or 60 Hz), sometimes it can be useful. All photos are saved in the phone memory within several seconds, then, you can view them in Photo Album. Every file has a special number, in the end of which there is month and date identificator. In bad lighting conditions the quality of images is far from excellent. Good shots can be received only in the street. On the display images also don’t look pretty because of low screen resolution.

But it is sufficient to recognize a face on such picture, nothing else can be demanded from this camera. In addition to Photo album, there is Slide show application; all photos are displayed with an interval here. Image of the high resolution is taken from the site Xonio.com. We couldn’t set data transmission, though we tried to do it within several hours.

As IR-port and bluetooth are not available in this model, it is rather difficult to transmit data to PC. You should create e-mail or MMS-message and send it to yourself to receive these data. The other way is purchasing a data adapter, but you have to pay extra money for that.

We had a phone from T-Mobile as a test sample. It had pre-instllalled settings for WAP and GPRS. Manually we tried to setup settings comparable with Moscow networks. We should notice that all these settings are located in different submenus, what is not always logical, and you need to use a user’s guide to do everything right. However, WAP didn’t work in our sample, we always received a message that there was an error. We think that this problem will be solved in official phones. But, nevertheless, a problem of images transmission will remain: on the one hand, you need time to solve it, on the other – money. According to Germans opinion, MMS settings are also not very simple.

A possibility to send and receive MMS messages is appeared in the phone, a respective menu item is called Picture Messaging. All settings are usual, special capabilities are not offered. Engineers added this capability but removed e-mail client and number of contact in the phonebook (up to 100). Besides, only 5 voice tags are available now.

Among other differences we can note a new version of wap-browser, it is 2.0 here. All other features are similar to T720, you can know about them if you read a respective review.

Manufacturer indicates that this model has 0.83 W/kg (1.6 W method) SAR-level.

Impressions

The phone became more massive, but the autonomy was greatly increased. Quality connection and volume of the loudspeaker are similar to T720. As before, keys response slowly to commands, processor doesn’t cope with the loading. Available MMS function and absence of e-mail client don’t make the phone attractive. Many of users will refuse to buy this phone because of the small phonebook, which is not typical for the phones of this class. Lesser memory for Java applications is connected with camera. The latter is necessary to make photos, which can be used in the phone. Transmission of images to PC is difficult and useless, because images have an average quality. The phone costs 60-70 USD more than T720, so, in Russia the phone price will be about 360-370 USD in the beginning of February. Even, taking into account a sufficient autonomy, we can’t recommend it to purchase, T720i is a successor model. We think that the phone won’t be demanded on the market, because firstly, it is rather expensive and, secondly, many customers don’t need a camera yet. So, Motorola T720i is a typical niche solution.
