Andy Rubin: 850k Android Activations Per Day    [ 27-02-2012 16:44 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

For those of you who enjoy numbers Google's Andy Rubin has been forthcoming with some new Android statistics. He has revealed that Android as a whole is now clocking up a very impressive 850,000 activations each and every day and that rate is actually increasing. It shouldn't be too long before we reach the magic million mark given that year on year growth in activations has shot up by 250%. The Android Market is now the container vessel for 450,000 apps, which means that Android is now just 50,000 apps behind Apple's App Store and could soon take the title of world's biggest app store. Those 450,000 apps are seeing downloads of a billion per month and those apps are being downloaded to some 300 million Android devices around the world.

Apple Planning On Ditching 30-Pin Connector?    [ 27-02-2012 16:30 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: iMore     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple fan site iMore is claiming that Apple are considering ditching their ubiquitous 30-pin connector option. The reason for this change is what you would expect, a desire for a smaller option that would free up more internal space for the addition of new technology. The change to a new system would allegedly free up a few precious millimetres of room. That may not sound like much to you and I, but with devices becoming ever smaller it is actually a pretty significant saving.

If, and indeed when, Apple does eventually get around to changing its connector option it will invariably mean that the existing ecosystem of gadgets and gizmos that utilise the 30-pin option will be rendered obsolete. That means forking out to replace all those devices, but that's progress for you.

41 MP Nokia PureView 808 Takes A Cracking Picture With An Outdated OS    [ 27-02-2012 16:20 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's big announcement for MWC is certainly big, a 41 MP cameraphone. The new handset, the 808 Pureview isn;t just about the megapixels though, the technology encased within promises improved quality when in low light conditions and enhanced image compression so as to allow for easier sharing of large image files. The main talking point of the device will of course be the 41 MP sensor, but in what is perhaps a strange move Nokia have decided to opt for Symbian as their choice of operating system. It's a decision that hasn't been met with universal approval as Ovum analyst Tony Cripps expalined "The PureView 808's Symbian Belle operating system might detract from its appeal to a broader market, where it deserves recognition". The BBC Rory Cellan-Jones echoed that sentiment "Nokia's put this on a Symbian phone, which will seem strange to people".

I'm not going to comment too much about the looks given how subjective a topic that is, but Tony Cripps perhaps summed it up best:

It's a pity that Nokia was unable to combine the photographic prowess of the PureView 808 with the style of the Lumia 900.

The choice of operating system aside the handset does indeed take a very impressive picture. Engadget have already posted up some sample shots and they are pretty breathtaking considering that they were taken using a phone. The handset features a pixel oversizing technology that will allow the user to zoom without a loss in quality when using lower resolutions than the full blown 41 MP.
