HTC: We're Thinking Of Buying An OS    [ 12-09-2011 12:01 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Last week we had Samsung categorically stating that they would never pursue a webOS acqusiition. This week we have HTC saying that they are thinking about purchasing an OS of their own. The revelation comes from chairwoman Cher Wang who said "We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse".

Media reports on this topic have mentioned webOS, as you would no doubt expect them to given the recent events surrounding that platform, but there is no concrete proof yet that HTC are looking at webOS. Indeed Ms Cher herself says that "We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS".

The idea of HTC purchasing its very own OS is made all the more interesting by the seemingly intractable legal disputes it finds itself in over Android. Maybe HTC feels it would have a firmer footing if it were holding the dice so to speak?

Smartphones Outsell Feature Phones In Europe    [ 12-09-2011 11:21 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Moco News     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

For the first time ever smartphone sales exceeded feature phone sales in Europe during Q2 of this year. That's the finding from figures released by IDC. According to those figures 20.4 million feature phones were shipped during Q2 of this year whilst 21.8 million smartphones were shipped during the same period.

The number of feature phones shipped represents a startling 29% decrease from Q2 last year whilst smartphones saw a 49% increase for the same time periods. Indeed smartphones made up 52% of all mobile shipments in Q2 2011. Even with the rise in smartphone shipments the overall number of mobiles being shipped slipped by 3%. That decline is being attributed to the current economic climate in many European countries, which has seen consumers put under increasing financial pressure, but also on Nokia's decline in recent years.

The First Picture Taken By An iPhone 5?    [ 12-09-2011 11:19 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: thisismynext     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Ok so the 'Vodafone leaks iPhone specs' thing was a bit of a damp squib, but here we have an iPhone 5 leak with a little more meat to it.

There are two images here, but let's start with the one on the left first. What you are looking at is purportedly an image taken using an iPhone 5. The EXIF data for the image lists the camera as an iPhone 4, but the specs don't conform to that device. For starters the original image was apparently 2235x2291 when first uploaded by whomever took the picture. That reslution would suggest an 8 MP camera. The lens reading is 4.3mm f/2.4, which isn't what the iPhone 4 reads as with its 3.85mm f/2.8.

Ok so we think it's an image taken by an iPhone 5, but what about the image on the right? A reader of This Is My Next decided to do some tinkering with the image on the left. He processed the image to straighten out the curved reflection to show a reflection of someone holding the capturing device in their hands taking the picture. There's bugger all of the actual device to see of course, but it is kind of cool to think that we might just be looking at the first image of the iPhone 5 anyway.

Vodafone Accidentally Leaks Unsurprising iPhone 5 Specs    [ 12-09-2011 08:35 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Apple Insider     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Vodafone UK made a wee bit of a gaffe today when they posted up an item about their Sure Signal signal booster. The post listed a number of different phones that are compatible with the signal booster and one of those devices just so happened to be the iPhone 5,

Now there's a fair bit of hoopla over what Vodafone said about the iPhone 5with some getting their knickers into a real twist over 'leaked specs', but to be frank the 'leak' isn't really anything to get excited about. For starters the specs Vodafone listed for the iPhone 5 are simply its internal memory, either 16 GB or 32 GB, and the fact that there will be a white and a black version. Neither of those 'leaks' is at all surprising.

There are a couple of things we can take away from this though. There was no 64 GB model mentioned. That would indicate that there isn't one and thus the memory capacity of the iPhone is holding firm at its current levels and not following the likes of the iPod Touch. The fact that both a white and black version were listed might suggest that the white version will be ready at launch in contrast to the ridiculous debacle of the white iPhone 4.

One other thing came from this though; apparently Vodafone feels it necessary to inform iPhone owners that their signal booster will work with a different colour of the same phone.
