Did An iPhone Prototype Go Missing In A Bar Again?    [ 01-09-2011 17:25 ]

CNET are running a report with a strong sense of deja vu. Apparently back in July an iPhone 5 prototype went missing ... again ... in a bar... again...

Remember last year when Gizmodo got a hold of an iPhone 4 prototype? The blogosphere almost went into a meltdown over that little caper, but things seem to be a bit more sedate this time around. For starters Apple apparently have the handset back in their posession and for another we only have CNET's word that any of this actually happened.

The story goes that an Apple employee lost the device whilst at a bar called Cava 22, in San Francisco. Apple were aware of what had happened and started to look for their missing device. The iPhone 5 was said to be found in a house in San Francisco and when police spoke to the person living there he is supposed to have admitted to having been at Cava 22 on the night the device went missing, but claimed no knowledge of it.

CNET contacted the San Francisco police department, but their response did little to confirm the story. A spokesperson said "[Apple] did not file a police report based on the loss at the bar". That quote would seem to indicate that there was a loss at the bar, but either it was all resolved very quickly or it isn't anywhere near as daramtic as we tech bloggers would like it to be.

Samsung Unveils Two New Devices, But Which One Is The Tablet 7 Which Is The Phone?    [ 01-09-2011 17:16 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: via BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung announced two new products today, neither of which is totally disimilar to the toher even though one is a smartphone and the other is a tablet. Let's start with the phone first.

The handset is the Galaxy Note and features an almost ridiculous 5.3 inch screen with a 1280x800 resolution SAMOLED display. That sort of screen size is borfering on tablet territory and to be honest you will probably need some pretty big pockets to squeeze this leviathan in. The processor is 1.4 GHz job (dual-core) and there's an 8 MP camera for snapping away assuming you can fit your hands around the device to take a picture. There's also a 2 MP front facing camera for video calls. The battery, like the screen, is pretty hefty, coming in at 2,500 mAh. Oh and it's running Gingerbread with TouchWiz on top.

Now the tablet Samsung announced isn't actually much bigger than the handset, at least in terms of screen size. The Galaxy Tab 7.7, as the name suggests, features a 7.7 inch screen again with a 1280x800 resolution SAMOLED display. Again we have a dual-core 1.4 GHz chip powering the show and again we have a dual camera setup. Internal storage is rated at 64 GB and HSPA+ support is thrown in as well. There is a 5.200 mAh battery to keep everything ticking along and the device will be running Honeycomb 3.2, again with TouchWiz on top.

You can check out a video of the Galaxy Note below:

Nielsen Figures Paint the Familiar Old Story i.e. Android Rules The Roost    [ 01-09-2011 17:13 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Nielsen     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The other day it was ComScore bigging up Android, toay it's Nielsen. According to their most recent figures Android managed to gain another percentage point during the last quarter to take a total share of the U.S. smartphone market equally 40%. That puts Android easily into first place and well ahead of second place iOS, which managed to hold onto a 28% share. That's important because it shows no real increase or decrease for iOS. Read into that what you will.

RIM saw its BlackBerry OS take a slight tumble, down 1% to 19%.  Microsoft controlled 8% of the market according to Nielsen, but that's with Windows Mobile and Windows Phone combined. Looking at just Windows Phone on its own Nielsen is reporting that it accounts for just 1%. Symbian ... well to be honest there isn't much point in even covering Symbian now that it has been relegated to the 'Other' category.

Of the total number of mobile phone users in the States 40% owned a smartphone. In terms of which platform users are looking to buy into next Android again came out on top again in almost every category. The only user group who didn't choose Android ahead of iOS were the early adopters.
