Google have revealed that their Android mobile operating system is now being used on 130 million devices. It was only back in May that the Big G said Android had clocked up 100 million devices so that's a cool 30 million devices in the past two months or so, once again underlining Android's continuing growth.
It's not the just the total that is increasing either; Google are saying that Android device activations are now some 550,000 a day strong. The rate of activations is pushing Android forward steadily and at this rate it shouldn't be too long before they catch up to Apple, which has so far sold a whopping 200 million iOS devices. Of course Apple does have the small matter of a new iPhone to unveil this year so Android might not have an entirely smooth ride as it sails past Apple.

Industry watchers and analysts had expected Sony Ericsson to deliver a relatively strong performance in Q2 this year, or at least to post a profit. Unfortunately such hopes have been dashed by the company's latest earnings report, which show a 50 million euro loss. To put that loss into perspective Sony Ericsson posted a profit of 12 million euros for Q2 last year.
Sales were down too with 7.6 million handsets being shipped in the quarter, which means that Sony Ericsson saw a 31% fall year on year. That of course means that revenue was down too; 1.76 billion euros last year compared with this year's 1.19 billion euros.
So why the loss? After all a range of new handsets, especially the Xperia arc, had gained generally positive reviews and a cost cutting campaign had been put in force with the expectation that the company would be more profitable. Well the company's President, Bert Nordberg, laid the blame on the Japanese earthquake, which had a huge impact on the electronics industry and disrupted Sony Ericsson's supply chain. That disruption apparently led to the loss of some 1.5 million handsets.

Some new figures from Millenial paint an old picture of the smartphone landscape. In its newly released figures for June Millenial demonstrates that once again Android takes the top spot as the most popular smartphone OS, accounting for 54% of impressions served by Millenial Media.
The rest of the picture is also very familiar. iOS takes the second placing here with 26% of impression (down 1% from May) and RIM stands at 15% (down 2% from May). Windows Phone manages to scrape together 2% of impressions, but here we see something interesting for Microsoft. Whilst their share of the overall market may be low usage is climbing; Windows Phone usage rose 31% quarter on quarter. The same is true for BlackBerry OS, which saw a 29% rise in usage over the same time period, even if it's market share is falling.
It's also worth revisiting that Android figure again briefly because even though Android dominates with a 54% share that is only a rise of 1% from its May value. In other words Android's growth is continuing, but it's not exploding, which is what we've seen in some other recent statistics.
