Nokia are embracing Windows Phone 7 with a passion it seems, going so far as to say their apps will be open to all, including use on handsets from their rivals. In essence Nokia will be doing what it can to enhance Windows Phone as a platform, not just its little corner of it. That was summed up by Marco Argenti, Nokia's senior vice president of developer and marketplace, "Windows Phone 7 doesn't need us to add more layers, but we will work hard to enhance areas like mapping, commerce and discovery".
So what does this mean on the ground for the end user? Well it's quite simple really; Nokia will be bashing out some apps that will be available to all rather than the more restricted approach that other manufacturers have taken so far. As Argenti says "Every Nokia App will be available on ever phone". Of course this doesn't mean to say that Nokia won't be restricting apps to Nokia users for 'exclusive periods', etc. It's also the case that some apps, mapping for example, will be built into the OS very heavily and thus users of other brands may find it difficult to fully utilise such apps.
Nokia will also be implementing operator billing for app purchases with deals already in place around the world in 191 countries. Furthermore Nokia are looking to expand their efforts in that field with NFC to enable customers to pay for real world goods and services with their phones.

Some more iPhone rumouring from everyone's favourite Taiwanese tech sheet DigiTimes! This time they are saying that component manufacturer Pegatron has received an order from Apple for some 15 million iPhone 5 units and that said handset will be ready to launch in September.
If you don't know who Pegatron are don't worry, they're not exactly tripping off most people's tongues, especially being overshadowd by the far more notorious Foxconn. However, Pegatron has worked for Apple in the past with Cupertino having selected them to build the CDMA iPhone for Verizon in the U.S.
At any rate DigiTimes are also maintaining the line that the next generation iPhone will not be a major upgrade from the iPhone 4. That's been a widely held belief amongst many for some time now with the iPhone 5 expected to see some improvements over its predecessor e.g. a better camera, etc, but nothing truly substantial. For that it seems we may have to wait for the iPhone 6 ...

It was recently announced that Windows Phone had amassed 25,000 apps in its app store. A big achievement for the nascent platform to be sure and Microsoft can be justly proud of that. However, someone else is taking the credit for the jump in app numbers ... and that someone is Nokia.
Yes, the manufacturer that doesn't actually have a Windows Phone device for sale, is taking the credit for the upswing in Windows Phone apps. Is it justified though? Well in the words of Marco Argenti, Nokia's senior vice president of developer and marketplace, "After we announced our partnership with Microsoft, the amount of apps coming in to the marketplace has actually gone up quite a bit, has almost tripled".
Certainly the prospect of having Nokia onboard won't be hurting the appeal of Windows Phone in terms of attracting developers and even without a device ready for market Nokia's power in the market must still be seductive for some as Argenti alluded to "So we've seen this inflection point very clearly that even without launching a device because they [developers] see greater opportunities [to] come".
It's also worth pointing out that Nokia have been keen to get their army of Symbian devs moving across to their newly embraced platform. Nokia is telling them that local success can be had with the new platform, but also there is of course this vast global audience that both Microsoft and Nokia can reach out to. Argenti says as much himself "... embrace the Windows [Phone] platform because we're going to bring it to all these markets that we will launch the device in".

Hot on the heels of the news that Window Phone has passed the 25,000 app mark one analyst is predicting that Microsoft's mobile platform will see its market share balloon to 17% next year.
The prediction comes from Chang Chi, deputy head of Market Intelligence Center, and his prediction also sees rises for both Android and iOS. Currently Android stands at 38% of the market and Chang sees this rising by 2% next year to give Android a commanding position. iOS, he says, will see its share rise from the current 18% to 19%, a modest increase, but an increase nonetheless. So where is Windows Phone going to be grabbing its new market share from?
Well Symbian is currently holding a 23% share of the market so the obvious inference here is that Windows Phone's growth will come at the expense of Symbian. It's not a far fetched hypothesis, indeed it is actually likely. Of course this is a prediction so it isn't set in stone and jumping up to 17% would be a massive leap for Windows Phone. Then again with Nokia set to start releasing Windows Phone devices it could be achievable.

The EU is looking at abolishing roaming fees for voice calls by 2015 across the union. It's obviously a great move for consumers (although the networks may not agree), but it's also part of a longer trend in European roaming that has seen the cost of using your mobile abroad steadily fall.
Vivienne Reding, the previous information commissioner set the ball rolling in that regard and since 2007 the cost of voice calls whilst roaming has been falling by 6% every year. That's great, but the real prize for consumers would of course be the elimination of roaming charges all together, after all the EU is supposed to be a common market.
Now you will notice that this proposalonly covers voice calls, not data. That's still a major expense when outside of your home country and it's sad not to see it mentioned in this initiative, but perhaps the scrapping of voice roaming charges might lead the way?

You probably remember the insane amount of business the original Galaxy S notched up, but its successor, the Galaxy S II, looks set to smash those records. The GalaxyS II is now Samsung's fastest selling smartphone ever after having sold an incredible 3 million units in just 55 days. That works out to be a handset once every 1.5 seconds bythe way.
To put that in context it took the original Galaxy S 85 days to reach the 3 million mark, a full month slower than the Galaxy S II. It was only months later that Samsung announced that the Galaxy S had passed the 10 million sales mark so don't be surprised if you hear something to the same effect soon with regards to the Galaxy S II.
