Review GSM-phone Siemens SX1. Camera and its software. Video

Review Siemens SX1. Summary>>

The camera’s lens is located on the phone’s back. In order to access it – you have to press the special soft-key located on the phone’s right side. Viewfinder’s role is played by the phone’s screen; the resolution can be selected by moving the joystick from left to write. The picture becomes a bit blurry when you move the phone, the camera is just unable to process the information so fast. The number of photos can be stored in the phone’s memory with defined settings is displayed on the screen. The picture can be taken by pressing the Joystick. Everything is simple and looks alike the Nokia’s smartphones. There are three types of file compression and their quality, JPEG is the format. VGA-resolution is supported (640x480 pixels), as well as 120x160 pixels and, 80x96 pixels (the last resolution is used for the phone book). Digital zoom is 4x, but we don’t advice using it since the quality gets significantly decreased. Any graphical editor will allow creating the same operation. The phone can be used as a portable binocular, that’s what for the zoom feature, is needed.

Since the screen is really nice the pictures look sharp and pleasant. The phone doesn’t have nightshot mode, but the pictures turn out to be good anyway. Several photos were made in bad lighting conditions, you will notice them instantly. In my opinion the picture quality can be compared with the phones that have nightshot feature for their cameras.

80õ96 High quality

80õ96 High quality, 2x zoom

120õ160 High quality

120õ160 High quality, 4x zoom

480õ640, High quality

480õ640 in the dark conditions

The software allows choosing the type of memory on which the picture will be stored (memory card, internal memory).

The picture quality on PC is ordinary; we can’t really say that the photos are horrible or extraordinary good. They are alike the other pictures being made with the phones that have VGA-cameras on board. The main difference is that SX1 has fewer options for the pictures. In part it is expiated by a separate editor which allows editing the photos, it’s called Image Fun. You can create new image in it, or edit the existing one. You will be satisfied with this editor in case if you don’t need advanced features. Creative people will definitely like this editor.

The pictures can be viewed from the Gallery; the pictures here are sorted by the memory types they are stored at, you can create your own folders and sort them the way you need. Everything is made on a good level.

You can read more about the synchronization and picture transfer in the special paragraph.

The picture samples can be seen here (about 25 pictures made in various conditions)>>>

Video. You will have to install the special software from CD in order to record video clips, this CD is shipped in every package. There isn’t anything special about the shooting mode, it’s a QCIF resolution (176x144 pixels), and 15 fps per second. The sound can be either recorder or no, it’s all up to you. The file size is limited to 95kb by default. This was made in order you being able to send this video with an MMS message. If you remove this limitation you will be able to record as long as the there is free memory present on the phone or the MMC card. We highly recommend keeping the high frame rate being turned on; otherwise the video clip will become useless.

Video clip quality can be rated as average and compared with other models. The sound gets recorded without any remarks to the conditions and location, it doesn’t matter if you are on concert, when you will play the video clip the sound will be really loud, the phone will start “screaming”.

Video clip examples – 1, 2, 3. Each of them is 95 Kb.

The videos can be viewed on SX1 with the help of the very same Video application or RealOne player that is installed as well. There is a wide set of video clips located on the CD and made especially for ROP and SX1. Some of them look really attractively and colorful.

The side button that is used for camera will not work in case “Video” is running, even if you were viewing a video clip, and not making it. Seems that this application reserves the camera for its needs, this isn’t really handy especially when you need to make an instant picture…
