Review Sagem myX-2

Sagem myX-2, live pictures

Standard kit:

  • Phone
  • Charger
  • User's guide

Sagem made an unexpected move having presented low-end device X2 equipped with color screen, while X3 has no color screen. It is explained by that the X2 is a subsequent solution; per se, X2 is a low-end device of new generation. On the one hand, it is more interesting than the existing models, but on the other hand, it is an intermediate solution between them and between such device as SonyEricsson T230 and Siemens A60. Such model won’t be in demand on the market for a long time as it’s the intermediate solution. However, judge for yourself, the developers built this model on the basis of X5, which is concerned to the mid level. The standard X5 (256 color display; there are also 4096 color phones on the market) will disappear after the release of the X2.

X2’s design is strict and youth, that extends the potential audience. There will be available different color solutions on the market. Only front face color differs; the back surface is silver for all variations. The device has changeable face panels, so you could select panel of different color. On the other hand, you should look for it because there are no such panels in all the European countries. The most simple way is to order one on the manufacturer’s site.

The back cover is snapped shut by 2 pawls located on the lateral surfaces of the device. Such construction is reliable from the position of cover’s fixation, but it is rather uncomfortable in using, it’s necessary adapting to it.

This model is equipped with lithium-ionic battery. The capacity makes 700 mAh and according to the manufacturer, the device could prove up to 180 hours of standby time and up to 2 hours of talk time. In reality, the device operated about 4 days in case of 20 minutes of talking and up to 15 minutes of using other functions. Time of full recharging makes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The screen displays up to 256 colors and its resolution makes 101x80 pixels (30x26mm). The screen displays up to 4 text lines, 1 header and text labels line. The display does not create records in color rendering, the picture is visible but the colors are not very bright and saturated. This screen is of previous generation and it is similar to SonyEricsson T300 and Sagem X5. Such display is acceptable for this segment. The screen is visible in sunlight but colors fade of course. .

The keyboard is made of rubber; alphanumerical keys are grouped as horizontal blocks. Keys have rather small stroke that creates troubles when dialing fast. Keyboard’s comfort is average but you can quickly adapt for using it. The backlight is green and it is not uniform. The designations on the keys have are small when the backlight is on, they flow together and become poor visible. 4-way navigation key is used for browsing the menu; it does not support pressing.

To the interface connector is located on the bottom butt end, you can also connect a headset to it. The phone does not have a strap holder.

Phone’s dimensions are comfortable for carrying it however you want (99x45x20.5 mm). The weight is also standard – 89 gr.

Menu

To enter menu you should move the navigation key vertically. The main menu is presented as animated icon set with text labels. All the submenus are the same as the main one. The menu has no fast shortcut number navigation. However, you can assign the most frequently used functions to the soft keys.

Phonebook. You can store up to 250 names in the phonebook, only one number can be stored for each entry. The device has caller groups. You can also add your own caller groups. In the main list, you can see the names for phone’s memory and from SIM-card, there is also search by the first letter.

Messages. The device can save up to 100 messages, templates are available. The phone supports EMS, so you can format text and set font’s type. You can also use T9 while typing a message (Russian is also supported).

WAP. Usual wap-browser, version – 1.2.1

Picture Puzzle.Traditional Picture Puzzle game. You can choose any picture and try collecting it.

Sounds. Sound settings for calls, messages and alarm. Polyphonic ring tones are quite good.

Screensaver. Here you can adjust menu’s color scheme, screen saver and wallpaper. Nothing special.

Settings. Here you can see memory’s amount, select menu’s language, adjust screen’s contrast, date and time. You can also set shortcuts here.

Call lists. Besides the list of last 20 calls with indication of date and time you can also adjust call divert and black-list here.

Security. Here you can find all the settings concerning to security, including key lock.

Accessories. Calculator is convenient and offers simple functions. The phone has currency converter, usual single alarm and countdown timer.

Impressions

Reception quality is very good, sound volume in loudspeaker is good, it’s explained by the presence of handsfree feature. Polyphonic ring tones sound well, they are not always audible in street but you will never miss a call in room. Vibration alert is average by force.

In case of 100-105$ price this device is quite good low-end solution with color screen and polyphonic ring tone. On the other hand, color screen is fashion tendency, as there’s no real need in it for low-end phone. Hence, it’s possible to suppose the device will be on demand by those who want to purchase cheap color phone. The X2 won’t be on demand for long time, taking into account the release of competing models with better screen. That means the price will decrease up to 85-75$ in the near future.
