Review Motorola v60i/v66i

Motorola v60i , live pictures

At first sight differences from the base model Motorola v60 are not significant, but sometimes minor things form the whole. The design of the hanset is the same, but a front plate is made of translucent plastic with a silver background here. All other changes are in technological features. A re-newed version of v66 has the same differences.

A main menu was renewed, some menu items were deleted and some new ones were added. As for me, it becomes more convenient now. A possibility to create shortcuts, including voice shortcuts, is remained, so, a navigation is rather easy. For the first time one can assign URL as a shortcut and its call automatically opens wap-browser and desired wap-page. Some new actions were added to standard keys. When you press a scroll key up, phonebook is opened (menu item – Add a new name); when you press it down you can view the first record in the phonebook. A side volume key helps not only to adjust volume but switch to the vibrating mode. When the phone is closed Smart key and volume key allow to switch types of incoming alert.

Let’s open the phonebook, where we could find a first considerable change. Now up to 1000 phone numbers can be stored in the phone memory. But as before all records assigned to one contact are displayed as different ones in the list. However, there is a possibility to select memory type (SIM-card or phone) while adding a new name. There is also a new field to add e-mail address, which can be saved only in the phone memory. It is possible to cut the address from SMS message. Finally, special personal melodies can be assigned to records from the phonebook.

Such menu as "Messages" also has some new peculiarities. The phone supports EMS in version 4.0, what allows you to receive and send messages with graphic and ringing tones. There is a pre-installed set of graphic pictures which can be used while creating messages. The phone also supports concatenated messages and that’s why there is no symbol counter there. A concatenated message, which consists of several usual message, is displayed as one message in the Outgoing folder.

You can set e-mail gateway address of current operator, and then, you will have an opportunity to send short messages to e-mail addresses. But concatenated messages are not supported here, only letters of usual SMS length can be send.

A new menu item – Chat, which relates to SMS messages, is appeared in the main menu. This function is fully compatible with phones from Nokia.

Also GPRS counter was added in the new models. One can download ringing tones or screen savers with a help of browser, they are automatically recognized by the phone.

As you’ve already understood, the phone has screen savers, which can be static and animated. In the second case an animation is displayed during one minute, then, it stops to save battery power. Some other imperceptible features were also added to so save energy. The most interesting one is automatic selection of used band (GSM 900/1800/1900).

Finally, the main new feature of the phones is Java (J2ME). Up to 1Mb of memory is given for programs; up to several Java games are pre-intalled to demonstrate Java capabilities. Up to 126 Kb is demanded to save the list with best results (extra memory). Initially up to 700 Kb is occupied by games, new application can be downloaded only by air, not with a help of cable.

Among other changes we can notice 10 new ringing tones (totally the phone supports 72 ringtones now) and a possibility to compose or download own melodies 256 bites each (totally up to 32 melodies). There is also up to 2 minutes of voice memo recording. The handset supports mp3-player, which is available as an extra accessory. Two new games also appeared - Falling Numbers and Video Poker. Your mission in the first game is to press the key, corresponding to a falling number. This game is not very interesting.

There are many new accessories compatible to v60i, for example, front and rear covers and special front plates.

We think we were able to describe all new features of the new models. In the end I would like to say that i-series are successors of v60 and v66 and they have the same price. So, if you are going to purchased one of them, we recommend to choose i-models while they are more advanced ones.
