Rumours concerning new phones are of course our bread and butter and any self-respecting gadget lover thrives on those kinds of tidbits. However, for those doing the leaking sometimes there are consequences. Case in point Joe Marini, the principal program manager for Windows Phone, or rather the ex principal program manager for Windows Phone.
Marini was fired from his position for tweeting about upcoming Nokia products, namely Nokia's first Windows Phone devices. In his tweet Marini said "I just got a chance to try out one of the slickest looking #Nokia phones I have ever seen. Soon, you will too! #wp7". Now you can't post a tweet like that and not expect to receive some questions on it from interested parties.
One of the questions he was asked was to rate it between a 1 and a 10. Marini gave it a rating of 8, which again prompted questions as to why an 8 and not a 10. Rsponding to such questions Marini replied "Yea the camera was good, but I didn't have optimal lighting, I'd like a larger screen too". His actual assessment of the device, again tweeted, was " Overall I would say an 8. Solid feel, good camera, responsive UI, and nice little touches on the body construction".
Now some may say that Marini deserves to be fired for such a leak, but frankly what exactly has he leaked? There were no pictures or videos or even detailed specifications. Just an initial first impression, which was positive (although of course Marini is biased in that regard). Microsoft and Nokia need to be drumming up interest in these products and those sort of vague leaks do just that without giving the game away.
