Steve Jobs Dies At 56    [ 05-10-2011 19:43 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, has died at the of 56 the company announced.

In a statement Apple said "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundations of Apple".

Jobs had been ill for some time, first announcing that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer in 2004. In recent years speculation over his health had mounted with Jobs appearing increasingly gaunt during public appearances.

Bill Gates joined those offerring tribute to Jobs "For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him it's been an insanely great honour. I will miss Steve immensely".

Jobs' deaths comes just one day after Apple announce its latest batch of products, including the next generation of the iconic iPhone that Jobs first launched back in 2007. Jobs' role in the company took a backseat to his medical condition when he handed over the running of the company to Tim Cook to take a medical leave of absence, before finally resigning in August, making Tim Cook the new CEO.

Jobs was undoutedly the face of Apple and the company will be forver linked to him. His leadership helped turn Apple into one of the most successful companies in the world and it was often to Jobs that consumers looked to see what the next big thing would be.

All of us here at Mobile-Review send our thoughts and prayers to Steve Jobss family and friends at this time. The world may have lost a great man, but it is all the better for having had him in it, even for just a short while.

Gingerbread Accounts For Almost 40% Of All Android Devices    [ 05-10-2011 18:28 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Android Developers     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

New statistics gleaned from the Android Market over the past few weeks show a massive increase in Gingerbread adoption. Earlier this year Gingerbread held just 1% of Android users, but that has leapt up to 38.2%. It's still not the top Android version though, that honour goes to Froyo with its 45.3% share, but Gingerbread isn't far behind.

It's interesting to see from these figures that Android fragmentation, long held as the platform's bane, is diminishing. Of all Android users 95.7% are running at least Android 2.1. Honeycomb makes an appearance in the chart too, but its share is just 1.8%. That of interest because it demonstrates the gap between the smartphone user base and the tablet user base and perhaps underscores the idea that Android tablets, for all their variety and pricing options, haven't quite picked up momentum yet. Of course with IceCream Sandwich around the corner that might soon change.

Video: Nexus Prime Appears In Profile Cameo    [ 05-10-2011 18:22 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: via IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Another day another story, that's how it is in techland. Yesterday the iPhone 4S took centre stage, but today there's some growing chatter surrounding a new video from Samsung Unpacked showing off the Nexus Prime. Nnow before you get too excited it's not much of ana ppearance, just a profile shot, but nevertheless it is there.

The tagline is 'Something Big Is Coming' and even though the glimpse is fleeting it is a bit of a 'wow moment'I have to say. The handset is just there and with those sleek curved lines it catches your eye and then it's gone again. It's certainly an effective video from that point of view.

For those who haven't been keeping up the Nexus Prime is said to feature a 1.5 GHz dual-core chipset, 4.65 inch HD display and of course the surved design you briefly see in the video. The handset has no physical hardware buttons except for a volume switch and a lockscreen button and it comes in metal to boot.

Video: Apple Predicted Siri Back In 1987    [ 05-10-2011 17:29 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: via Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A rather interesting wee video from Apple here ... made in 1987 and pretty much predicting Siri, which was announced yesterday. The concept shown here is eerily similar to what we saw yesterday although a bit more cheesey it has to be said. It's worth pointing out two important things here; the technology shown here didn't actually exist when this video was made, it was just a concept for this video, and secondly the concept itself is a bit more advanced than what we saw with Siri yesterday.

What we see in the video is a bit more akin to Star Trek than Siri, but the basic concept is pretty much the same and shows that Apple was thinking along these sort of lines back in the 80s. A bit more of a coincidence is that in the video the calendar shows a date of 16th September and given the information the Professor was looking for the date is supposed to be 2011. That means that Apple's preiction from 1987 was off by just 18 days.
