Video: DoCoMo's 10 Minute Charge Time Battery    [ 03-10-2011 21:29 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As much as mobile technology has advanced over recent years one limiting factor that still plagues users is battery life. Batteries have certainly improved over the years, but of course with increased demands even improved batteries aren't lasting as long as we would like. One solution, apart from extending battery life further of course, would be to shorten charging times.

Enter NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile network They're touting a new battery they have developed, which they claim can be charged in just 10 minutes. The battery itself is designed for use with the NEC Medias Android smartphone, which is only available in Japan. DoCoMo aren't saying exactly when the new battery will go on sale, just that it will be as soon as possible. Even if it is Japan only at the moment, the possibility is there for it to spread to other shores, or at least we can hope.

The iPhone 4S?    [ 03-10-2011 20:08 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The picture below purports to show a cheaper iPhone that Apple will allegedly unveil Tomorrow alongside the iPhone 5. Gizmodo Brazil got a hold of the device from a Foxconn factory in Brazil and apparently the hardware is near identical to the iPhone 4. The particular model they saw had a label marked 'reprovado', which means 'disqualified'. That could indicate that that model didn't pass muster in terms of quality assurance, but at the same time it does still leave open the possibility of the iPhone 4S (the supposed name of the new device) not actually resembling the current iPhone 4 at all. Anyway, it won't be too long until we find out.

Twitter Assured It's Ready For iOS 5 Launch    [ 03-10-2011 20:05 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: TUAW     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With all (well most) eyes on the iOS 5 launch Twitter has been keen to re-assure its members that it is very much prepared for the potential onsalught. iOS 5 will of course feature integrated Twitter support, making it even easier for iOS 5 users to send tweets and Twitter is downplaying the possibility of a crash, saying "... on its end all the work to make sure that doesn't happen so that all those new iOS users have an awesome experience".

Indeed Twitter has been working towards this for the better part of a year now. VP of engineering Michael Abbot commented that "During the last nine months, there's been more infrastructure changes at Twitter than there had been in the previous five years at the company". Ok so Twitter are talking the talk, but will they walk the walk? Call me a pessimist, but I am still thinking that come the launch I'll be seeing the fail whale off the starboard bow.
