Video: Toshiba 367ppi Screen Shipping This Year    [ 18-05-2011 18:12 ]

It wasn't all that long ago that the big battle of numbers in the mobile space was camera megapixels, but these days it's increasingly about screen pixel density. Apple of course highlighted the issue with their Retina display on the iPhone 4, but now Toshiba are raising the bar with their 367ppi screen that they have confirmed will ship this year.

Toshiba aren't saying exactly what device the new screen will feature in although I'd wager good money on it being some sort of Android contraption. Engadget grabbed some one on one time with the screen so check out the video below:

Intel: Partnering With Nokia Was A Mistake    [ 18-05-2011 17:54 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Intel's CEO Paul Otellini is laying the blame for the company's late launch of smartphone processors at the feet of Nokia. According to Intel "In hindsight, Nokia was the wrong partner to have picked". Ouch!

Otelleni has promised his investors that Intel chips would be powering smartphones by early next year "You'll see the first Intel-based phones in the first part of next year". The handsets in question will apparently come from 'major players'. Of course Intel was supposed to be shipping these chaps by this year, but the MeeGo tie-in has apparently led to the delay and Intel has quite the market to enter now with competition in smartphone chips heating up.

Windows Phone To Overtake Android?    [ 18-05-2011 17:30 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Pyramid Research     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some new figures are projecting a very healthy future for Windows Phone, even beating Android by as early as 2013. The figures, from Pyramid Research, are based off Q1 2011 results and suggest that Microsoft's partnership with Nokia could pay off big time for Redmond.

The basic idea is that Nokia's ability to mass produce relatively cheap handsets could see Windows Phone soaking up sales in many developing markets where the more high priced devices such as the iPhone et al simply can't compete.

One very important point to make here though is that this is just a projection based off of a single quarter's results. It might make sense to say that Nokia's input will boost Windows Phone, but extrapolating years into the future from a limited data set really isn't particularly useful in my opinion. As ever we will just have to wait and see ...

Apple Proposing New Smaller SIM Cards?    [ 18-05-2011 16:27 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple continues to try and push the enevelope of just how thin it can make its devices by proposing a new standard of SIM card that rumour has it will be smaller than current SIM cards to enable devices to be reduced in size. The iPhone 4 already uses micro-SIM cards of course so you have to ask yourslef just how much smaller these things can practically get. The same question also applies to the devices themselves.

For example, whilst many of us love sleek products how thin can a handset become before it feels unnatural or unwieldly? Of course smaller SIM cards do open up other possibilities, such as using the space saved from the SIM card to include higher capacity batteries or more features.

It's also important to note that just because Apple has proposed a new standard for SIM cards doesn't mean it will come about. Even if it does it might take a while as Reuters noted in their report:

A spokesman for European telecoms standards body (ETSI) confirmed Apple had made the proposal for the new standard for SIM cards, but decision on starting the standardisation work, which can take more than a year, was not yet made.

"This process may take some time, up to a year or more, if there is strong disagreement between industry players. However, when there is broad consensus among the companies participating in the standards committee, the process can be accelerated to a number of months", he said.
