Facebook Wins 2011 Irony Award: Tries To Smear Google Over Privacy    [ 12-05-2011 18:41 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: The Daily Beast     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

There's certainly no love lost between Google and Facebook, the two companies having been getting into each other's faces more and more in the recent past and now it seems as if Facebook has decided to resort to a dirty tricks campaign. Essentially Facebook hired a PR firm to try and smear Google. Very classy!

It was the Daily Beast that reported how Facebook had engaged the services of PR firm Burston-Marsteller to get writers at various publications to indulge in some Google bashing. Now this is where the story takes both an ironic and completely surreal turn because the thing Facebook wanted to attack Google over was ... PRIVACY! Yes folks privacy! Let's just recap that so we are clear:

Facebook, a company that has been repeatedly lambasted for its own privacy policies, is attempting to smear Google for its privacy policies.

Apart from being so ironic that I had to check the thesaurus to see if there was a word to express irony beyond irony (there isn't by the way), it is also a very uncool move (it barely registered 20 nano Fonzies on the cool-o-meter). On a more serious note it does show up Facebook as being worried about Google though. Why else do you play dirty other than if you feel your own product/service simply isn't good enough to beat an opponent in a fair fight?

Video: Samsung Galaxy S II 1.5 GHz Overclock    [ 12-05-2011 18:40 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: XDA Devs     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Samsaung Galaxy S II is definitely a fine piece of Android smartphonery, but even with its inherent power it's just not enough for some people. Hence coolbho3000 over at XDA Devs has decided to ramp up the power to a phone melting 1.5 Ghz. He recorded the results on video for your viewing pleasure and of course he's provided the necessary instructions so you can try this yourself.

As for how well the handset performs with this overclock you will no doubt be impressed with the benchmark results. Interestingly enough the video mentions that overclocks to 2 GHz are possible although they aren't stable at the moment, but we'll still look forward to seeing them.

Looking For A Prostitute? There's An App For That!    [ 12-05-2011 18:32 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: ZDNet     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Disclaimer: The following article is very much real. This is not a spoof or a joke in any way.

Why the disclaimer? Well if you have read the headline then you should know. Yes there is indeed a new app launching for the iPhone called SugarSugar that promises to let users find Sugar Daddies and Sugar Babies. What exactly does that mean? Well, according to SugarSugar's website, the 'sugar lifestyle' involves finance meeting romance e.g. you can find women who will sleep with you in exchange for paying for things for them, etc.

Now some may say that the way this is setup is in fact legal and that strictly speaking it isn't prostitution. Ok fine and for the record I'm not casting any moral aspersions here, but if sex and parting with money at some stage in the proceedings is involved then it sure as hell looks very similar to the world's oldest profession.

At any rate the app launches on 1st June (assuming Apple pass it).

iPhone Ad Parody: Go F**k Yourself    [ 12-05-2011 18:17 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

I love those videos that spoof iPhone commercials and really show up the inbuilt arrogance in them. This particular video has to be the king of demonstrating that arrogance though. The whole message of the video is summed up in one line: "If you don't have an iPhone, frankly, go fuck yourself." Definitely worth a watch, if not for the social commentary then at least for the lulz.
