Deutsche Bank director Chris Whitmore has been making some comments about a possible cheaper iPhone that seem to have sparked rumours that Apple might be about to launch just such a handset alongside the next generation iPhone later this year. The actual comment was "... the time is right for Apple to launch a cheaper iPhone alongside a new high-end model".
It's basically just an opinion with no actual facts behind it to suggest that a cheaper model will surface later this year. The comments, coming as they do from a respected institution, lend weight to rumours of a cheaper iPhone though. Of course such rumours have been around for a while now and the comment certainly holds a lot of water when you put it into the context of Android now seeing more than half a million activations every day. A cheaper iPhone model would allow Apple to gain some traction in the mid-tier market and more effectively compete with Google. Of course Apple have shown no sign of doing this, instead relying on cutting the cost of previous models to attract such customers.

To say that Apple have a strong hold on the popular psyche and demand for cosnumer electronics would be an understatement, but the situation seems to be getting out of hand in China. Only recently we reported that a Chinese teenager had sold one of his kidneys to purchase an iPad. Selling your organs for a tablet is quite frankly ridiculous and the insane lengths some people are willing to go to to obtain an Apple product doesn't seem to be abating as a report emerged today of another Chinese teenager, a girl this time, offering to sell her virginity in exchange for an iPhone 4.
The girl posted a message on Chinese microblogging site Weibo offering to have sex in exchange for the handset after her father refused to buy the device for her. Some posters replied telling her she shouldn't do it whilst others made a joke of it saying that the iPhone 5 would soon be coming out. Hopefully she heeds the advice of the former posters and doesn't go through with it.

Android's growth continues unabated with the latest figure from Andy Rubin once again showing that Android is marching ahead regardless of what any of the other platforms are doing. Rubin tweeted earlier today that Android is now seeing a whopping 500,000 activations per day and that even that figure is growing at 4.4% week on week.
Let's gain some perspective here though and rmeind ourselves that it was only in December that Android claimed to have passed the 300,000 activatiosn per day mark. Seven months later and that figure has grown by 60%. In short Android shows absolutely no sign whatsoever of slowing its pace, if anything it's getting faster.
