Telstra Cutting Sense UI From Gingerbread Update For Desire    [ 24-06-2011 17:04 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The questions over whether the HTC Desire would get the gingerbread update was threatening to turn into a bit of a sage as HTC first declared that no there wouldn't be an update before back tracking just 24 hours later. Well it's not over yet folks as Australian network Telstra has added a new twist to the tale by announcing that their Desires will be getting Gingerbread, but that HTC's Sense UI will be ditched.

The original reasoning behind saying there wouldn't be an update was pretty straightforward; HTC said the Desire didn't have enough memory. When they announced that Gingerbread would be coming to the handset after all many wondered where the extra memory would be coming from. HTC then said that to upgrade the Desire to Gingerbread 'select apps' would be left out from the update.

All this raises the question of just how much the end user experience will be affected by the Gingerbread update. Telstra clearly feels that a Gingerbread update means that Sense can't stay. Will other networks follow suit?

iOS Dominates UK Mobile Traffic    [ 24-06-2011 16:49 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

New figures from ComScore show Apple is leading the pack in terms of mobile web traffic in the UK. The iPad, for example, accounts for a very respectable 21.3% of tablet traffic in Britain whilst Android is barely registering with just 0.3%. Before we read too much into such a massive disaprity it is worth remembering that Android tablets have yet to really take off whereas the iPad is most definitely firmly cemented in terms of sales.

It's a different picture when it comes to smartphones though as the iPhone accounts for 29.9% of UK mobile traffic whilst Android trails with just 15%. The iPhone has double the traffic Android does and here at least Android is well established with a plethora of handsets on sale. Are Android users just not as interested in using data as much as their iPhone counterparts? That's hard to believe. The pattern is repeate doutside the UK too with iOS taking the biggest share of mobile data usage in countries like Canada, France and Japan.

One country that bucks that trend though is the U.S. where Android is reigning supreme in mobile traffic, holding a 35.6% share compared with the iPhone's 23.5%.

iPhone 5 To Feature Dual-LED Flash?    [ 24-06-2011 16:39 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Another iPhone 5 rumour for you in the slow build up to the autumn launch. Today we have the possibility that the next generation iPhone will feature a dual LED flash setup. Now that isn't terribly exciting in and of itself, but it does suggest (if true of course) that the iPhone 5 will be featuring an improved camera.

Other rumours doing the rounds have pegged the iPhone 5 as having an 8 MP effort so enhancing the flash component would tie in nicely with that. It would also tie in with rumours saying that the iPhone 5 will indeed be a major upgrade from the iPhone 4 and not hark back to the iPhone 3G to 3GS update.

Nokia Android: What Might Have Been?    [ 24-06-2011 16:30 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Weibo via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A rather interesting couple of images have popped up today purporting to show a possible Nokia Android device. Nokia were of course considering doing a deal with Google to use Android before they decided to shack up with Redmond and use Windows Phone. In that light these picture have at least a little credibility. Also adding to the credibility is the fact that they come from the same source that leaked a picture of Sea Ray back in May. It is worth pointing out though that they are unverified images so as always take with a pinch of salt.
