Rumour: Q3 2012 Launch For iPad Mini?    [ 16-12-2011 15:50 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: DigiTimes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

DigiTimes are reporting that Apple is gearing up to launch an ipad Mini towards the end of next year. The report cites anonymous sources within Apple's supply chain as saying that the device will sport a 7.85 inch screen. LG Display and AU Optronics will apparently build the displays with production said to begin in the second quarter of 2012 in time for a third quarter release. There's a bit of a contradiction here though because Apple has said in the past that a 7 inch display wasn't something they felt was right for these sort of products. However, with increased competition from the likes of the Kindle Fire as well as smartphones growing ever larger and intruding onto tablet territory it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that Apple feels it needs something in that space. Of course this is all rumour and conjecture at this point. Indeed previous rumours concerning an iPad Mini have focused on a device with a more standardised size, but with a lower price tag.

More Bad news From RIM - Delays, Losses & Tumbling Stock Prices    [ 16-12-2011 15:32 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BBC     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

To say that RIM lurches from one disaster to another these days is fast becoming a cliche. The latest bad news from the Canadian manufacturer is that their BlackBerry 10 series of handsets have been delayed. Originally planned for release sometime within the first few months of next year the handsets will now not see the light of day until late 2012. RIM is laying the blame for the delay on components not being ready in time.

RIM has been seen as the sick man of the industry for a while now. Their products increasingly look outdated and poorly executed so getting the BlackBerry 10 series of devices on shop shelves as quickly as possible will be crucial for the company. If they are indeed not launching until late next year then frankly one has to wonder what impact they can realistically have given RIM's current state of affairs. RIM is already very close to seeing its U.S. smartphone market share dip into single figures.

Delays weren't the only bad news to come out of RIM yesterday as they also downgraded their predicted sales for the current quarter. Originally the prediction stood at 14.8 million handsets, but that has now been downgraded to between 11-12 million. The performance issues didn't stop there though as RIM saw its net income drastically fall year on year. For the quarter ending on 26th November RIM took in $265 million. The same quarter last year saw RIM's income stand at $911 million, just shy of a cool billion. After hours trading reflected the sad state of affairs with RIM's share price tumbling 6%.

At this point is seems stupid to ask if there will be more bad news for RIM, rather then asking when.
