Rumour: Google Working On Siri Competitor Named 'Majel'    [ 14-12-2011 18:21 ]

Ever since Apple took the lid off Siri many an Android user has wondered what, if anything, Google would do to respond. Well rumour has it that the Big G is working on a voice system codenamed 'Majel'. It's supposedly launching before 2011 is over and done with and will be similar to Siri in terms of functionality and use. However, it will not support control of the handset or of any of the installed applications at launch according to the rumour mill. That sort of functionality may come later though, no doubt next year is more likely than this year.

Majel might very well tie in with Google's acquisition of Clever Sense, the chaps who created Alfred, which is a software personal assistant. Alfredis similar to Siri, but it is unclear yet how it relates to Majel. The name Alfred might conjure up images of a butler, perhaps even Batman's butler, which would seem fitting for an assistant, but what about Majel? Well, and this is just a guess, it might be a homage to Majel Barret, Gene Rodenberry's wife, who provided the voice for the Enterprise's computer on Star Trek The Next Generation.

The Lumia 800 will be released in a limited edition form soon, namely a pretty sweet looking Batman addition. Nokia are making just 40 of these little sweethearts so it really is a limited edition. Feast on it in the video and pictures below.

I don't normally go in for the whole 'let's do something funny with our phones' sort of caper, and I am a bit of a scrooge when it comesto Xmas, but even my dour heart was warmed by this little video. It's quite fun to watch, but every time you watch it the people behind it are donating 3p to charity to make sure you watch it!
