New figures confirm that Honeycomb, Android's first release specifically designed for tablets, has largely failed to make any meaningful impact. The figures show that Honeycomb accounts for just 1% of total Android usage. It's hard to spin that figure given just how low it is, but it is important to point out that the figures don't reveal whether users are put off by Honeycomb itself or the hardware using it.
The figures come from Chitika, which analysed hundreds of millions of impressions served to Android powered devices over a week long period. Whilst Honeycomb barely registered with just 1% Gingerbread accounted for around two thirds of all impressions. Froyo wasn't far behind with 28% and other versions made up the difference.
The figures don't show much impact for Ice Cream Sandwich, but that's to be expected given that it is only officially available for one device at the moment, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. As Ice Cream Sandwich takes off it should register a bigger share and crucially it can also be used on tablets.
Of course Ice Cream Sandwich may still not turn around Android's tablet woes if it is indeed a case of the hardware failing to excite customers. There is some indication that this is indeed the case with the iPad still the dominant player in the tablet market and tablets using other platforms failing to make any serious impression either. HP's webOS powered foray into the tablet market never really got off the ground and RIM's PlayBook has proven less than stellar in terms of customer uptake. Neither of those devices were running Android so it isn't just an Android issue, but rather a case of no one having yet come up with a compelling enough device to tempt buyers away from the iPad. Having said that Amazon's Kindle Fire has been garnering a lot of attention and might just be the little Android tablet that could ...

So far jail breaking your iOS 5 powered iPhone has required the oh so undignified step of tethering the handset to a computer. That is hopefully about to change soon though as can be seen in the video below. Hacker pod2g demos untethered jailbreaking so you know it is possible now. Alas the solution is not yet available for public consumption, but it can't be long now right?
