Android Continues To Dominate U.S., BlackBerry Barely Holding On To Double Digit Share    [ 22-08-2011 21:40 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: NPD     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

New figures released today from NPD group show Android continuing not only its domination oof the American smartphone market, but picking up pace to boot. In the second half of this year Android smartphone accounted for 52% of all U.S. smartphone sales. That's a good way ahead of the next best platform, iOS, which saw a slight gain to account for 29% of sales.

Whilst the news is great for Android and good for iOS, things aren't quite so rosy over in the RIM camp. BlackBerrys saw their share of the market drop to just 11%, barely managing to stay in double digit territory. Windows Phone wasn't faring much better remaining stagnant on 5%, but at least they weren't dropping. webOS put in a similar performance to Windows Phone, but of course with HP's discontinuation of the platform for phones that market share will soon evaporate.

What these figures don't show of course is how Google's acquisition of Motorola will affect the market. On the one and Google's Android partners have been heaping praise on the deal, but many wonder if they might eventually come into conflict given that Google will no essentially be producing its own handsets. NPD don't appear to believe that this will be the case, however, with Ross Rubin from the firm saying "Android's momentum has made for a large pie that is attractive to Motorla's Android rivals, even if they must compete with their operating system developer".

Video: Samsung Announcing Something Big On 1st September    [ 22-08-2011 18:45 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: via BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The 1st of September looks to hold something in store for Samsug fans with the company promising to announce 'something big' on that date at the IFA trade show in Berlin. What is that something? Well rumour has it that it could be Samsung's anticipated Honeycomb tablet, the one with the 7 inch SAMOLED screen as you may recall. However, Samsung have released a couple of teaser videos for the announcement and people can clearly be seen holding glowing objects to their heads so a phone seems to be on the cards too. It's not far off until we know for sure, but until then check out the teaser videos.

Microsoft Trying To Entice Former webOS Devs    [ 22-08-2011 18:28 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: WinRumours     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The demise of webOS may have closed one door, but as with all such things as one closes another opens. Microsoft's Senior Director of Windows Phone 7 Development, Brandon Watson, has been taking to Twitter to try and entice former webOS devs to come aboard the good ship Windows Phone. To that end he has been promising free phones, dev tools and training for those signing up. Apparently it's working because so far he's received around 600 replies from webOS devs looking to take him up on his offer.
