Chatter has been increasing around HTC's first 10 inch tablet, the Puccini, and today some screenshots from the device were released. The device the screenshots came from looks to be tied to the AT&T network in the States as you can see from some of the network specific applications present. The device should be shipping to customers with an 8 MP camera with dual-LED flash thrown in, a 1.5 GHz processor and HSDPA+ support. For now enjoy the screenies!

RIM hasn't exactly been tearing it up in the smartphone world of late, but one bright spot for the company, or rather for those hoping for something better from RIM, has been the promise of QNX smartphones. There have been some rumours going around that RIM might not be able to release the first of these until late next year, but Boy Genius Report has managed to secure some new information that points to a Q1 2012 launch.
First of all let's get the name out of the way. The device BGR got the lowdown on is called the BlackBerry Colt. That's a codename of course so what the final name is we will just have to wait and see. The name isn't important though, but what is is what RIM has had to sacrifice in order to get this device out the door in some reasonable time frame.
BGR's sources are telling them that the device will ship with a single core processor. That might strike you as weak sauce considering that dual-core setups are increasingly prevailent these days, not to mention the promise of quad-core chips in the not too distant future. So why the single-core madness? Well it seems the decision is based around the battery life of the device, an area that RIM has always prided itself on. It's not that a single core is set in stone here, but the indications seem to suggest that battery life trumps multi-core functionality for RIM.
It's not just the processor that's taking a bit of a knock though; email, one of the BlackBerry staples, is not starting the race in fine form either. Apparently the Colt will launch without support for current BlackBerry Enterprise Server setups, but RIM is working on a QNX specific server. That's not sounding too good now is it? Initial QNX servers will have support for Microsoft ActiveSync straight out of the box if a company wishes to use Microsoft Exchange.
If all of this isn't sounding very positive then do remember that these are initial reports and things can change. However, the 'superphone' monicker that was being applied to RIM's QNX handsets is looking decidedly more shaky.

There was a time a number of years ago when many of us in the mobile geek community often viewed Qualcomm as 'the bad guy' because of their insistence on promoting CDMA over GSM. Those days seem to be long gone now with many looking to Qualcomm to see what trick it has up its sleeve next. Case in point is Qualcomm's claim that its next generation of Snapdragons will be powerful ... very powerful ... very very powerful. Ok I think you get the idea.
Qualcomm is due to release its S4 'Krait' range of chips towards the end of this year and Qualcomm aren't shy on talking them up. With 28nm quad core architecture Qualcomm will release these S4 chips with the uprated Adreno 225 GPU, which should give this beast enough power to outshine even a PS3. That's some serious processing power for a phone!
The ability to display graphics intensive services that fluidly will ramp smartphones up a notch with possibilities such as using a smartphone like a games console coming to mind. Hopefully the drain on battery power doesn't take as equal a step forward.
