The next major update to Windows Phone 7 will likely see the platform designation bumped up to 7.5 according to a preview that has surfaced. The update, known as Mango, was rumoured to be Windows Phone 7.5, but this is the first time there has been some conclusive proof of that.
New features in the update include multi-tasking, faster app switches, file transfers ad background tasks. The browser side of things is also gettng an update with Mango in the form of Internet Explorer 9. Just as, if not more, important though is Nokia, who are waiting on the Mango release to start launching their own Windows Phone handsets. Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop has announced that Nokia will be bringing Ovi Maps to Windows Phone as well as their own content portal, which will feature operator billing provided by Nokia.
The release window for Mango is currently thought to be sometime around autumn, probably October according to the latest chatter on it.

It was just last week that it was revealed that iOS, the operating system powering Apple's mobile devices, was collecting and storing location data from users. The data was stored in a hidden file and maintained through transfers to different devices and backups. It all sounded rather scary for anyone concerned about privacy and predictably there were some people unhappy about this behaviour. Well one MacRumours reader decided to ask Steve Jobs about it and he got a reply, a typical Jobsian reply it has to be said:
Reader: Could you please explain the necessity of the passive location-tracking tool embedded in my iPhone? It's kind of unnerving knowing that my exact location is being recorded at all times. Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid. They don't track me.
Jobs: Oh yes they do. We don't track anyone. The info circulating around is false.
There you have it, Steve Jobs says that Apple doesn't track you. Of course that doesn't really tie up with what the researchers looking into the matter found, which was that iOS was collecting an enormous number of data points based on location and storing that data. Now to be fair it is possible to disable that tracking by turning off the location services on your iPhone, but a lot of apps use that service so it's not always realistic to expect people to do so.
With such a short reply there are bound to still be questions on this issue and personally I don't see it blowing over until Apple or Jobs himself addresses the matter more fully.

Lately it seems that everyone and their uncle has a tablet device coming to market, but the biggest exception to this has been Sony. Whilst the likes of Apple, Samsung, Motorola, HP, etc have all been touting their tablet devices to the public Sony has remained a hold out ... until now. Unveiled in Japan were the S1 and S2; two new tablet devices from Sony running Android Honeycomb.
The S1 is the more traditional of the two products being a familar tablet design with a 9.4 inch screen and featuring the rather juicy NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. It's also got 3G/4G (and WiFi of course!) onboard. The device is also a PlayStation certified device so it looks like it will be tying in nicely with Sony/Sony Ericsson's new PlayStation content for mobile devices e.g. the Xperia Play.
The other device, the S2, is a bit more unusual for a tablet device in that it has a clamshell design. When opened up it reveals two 5.5 inch screens, which can either act independently of one another or function as a single continous display area. Again a Tegra 2 powers the whole shebang.
Release dates are looking like sometime in the autumn for Japan, but no word for the rest of the world yet although with a bit of luck we won't be far behind.
