Video: iOS 4 Recording All Your Locations    [ 20-04-2011 19:31 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: The Guardian     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

There's a good bit of talk stirring over the revelation that iOS 4 is recording users' location continuously. Now I say revelation, but in fact this issue has been known about in techie circles for some time already. Basically what is happening here is that the iPhone is recording the user'slocation, timestamping it and then storing that information in a file on the iPhone called 'consolidated.db'. Now the thing about this file is that it is petty easy to find and access and in fact you will also be uploading the file to your PC when you backup your iPhone. The file persists across backups and even when moving to a new iPhone and this is an important point because the researchers are pointing to this as evidence that this recording behaviour is not accidental. In short then it's a real privacy risk.

For a more detailed explanation of the issue I very much recommend that you watch the video below where there is an in-depth discussion of the issue. It's a long video at 20 minutes, but definitely worth a watch.

GMail Mobile Web App Gets 'Undo' Button    [ 20-04-2011 17:30 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Google     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google are updating their mobile web app for GMail to include an 'undo' feature. Essentially you will be able to undo your last action; for example, undeleting a message you just sent to trash. Google describs the feature as:

Now when you use the Gmail mobile web app, you'll have a small window of opportunity to undo four key actions: archive, delete, add or remove a label, or move a message/conversation.

Now you will notice two key points in the above quote: the phrase 'window of opportunity' and the ommission of undoing sent messages as is available with the desktop version of GMail. On the first point I'm not too sure what exactly Gogle means by 'a small window of opportunity'; is that 3 seconds? 5 seconds? 10 seconds? At any rate I'm sure they'll make it clear in due time.

As for the second point this is a real shame because retracting a sent message is just a fantastic concept and would have been a huge serving of awesome sauce for mobile GMail users, after all you pretty much always have your phone with you when drunk and thus retracting those drunken emails on the move seems emminently sensible (yes it does seem more sensible not to get drunk, but I like beer ok?).

The update is available for Android users of course, and iOS and BlackBerry OS 6.0 users.

More iPhone 5 September Talk    [ 20-04-2011 17:19 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As we all know (or we should all know) by now, the prevalent theory on the iPhone 5 is that it will break with the traditional summer release window of iPhones gone by and instead appear sometime around September.  That's been the consensus amongst the pundits for a while now and Reuters are again reinforcing that notion with various anonymous (as ever) insiders providing them with tidbits supporting the idea.

For example, one insider who spoke with Reuters mentioned that the next iPhone would actually start production come July of this year, which would be pretty much bang on perfect timing if it were to release in September. The source also mentioned that the new handset would be shipping with a faster processor, but that, surprise surprise, it would look pretty much the same as the current model.

So there we go folks, yet another nail in the coffin of the summer release. Do remember though that these unnamed sources, etc are not providing concrete proof yet so it is all just speculation at this stage, but speculation that seems to be mounting with every passing week.
