The chaps at Pocketnow have been taking a peek at the onscreen keyboard bundled with Windows Phone 7. It looks pretty much par for the course really, no big surprises in terms of layout etc and all the usual bits and bobs are there such as spell-check and auto-complete. Well having said that spell-check only makes an appearance when typing an email or using Word so you won't have it checking your text when bashing out a SMS. When it does kick-in the process is simple enough, the word is underline din red and you tap it to change it to the correct spelling.
There are no surprises in the lack of copy-paste functionality although Microsoft have said that this is something that will added (in some form) after launch. Annoyingly you can't select more than one word at a time, hopefully that gets changed too. If all that sounds too annoying whilst you wait then you are thinking that you can probably just swap out the keyboard for one of your own choosing a le Android ... nope! Didn't know that? Surprisingly enough there are still a lot of people who don't, but it's true, the onscreen keyboard will not be changeable by devs.

HTC have had a lot of column inches today, mostly because of the event they are holding in London where they are showing off some new products and services. However, there is another piece of HTC news doing the rounds today that isn't connected to the London event. Digitimes has apparently been speaking with some Taiwanese component makers and the story they're getting is that HTC will bringing a tablet to market next year. Early next year in fact, or so they say. The other component to the rumour is that the tablet might be running Gingerbread. Of course rumour also has it that HTC are prepping a Chrome OS tablet, probably making ana ppearance around the same time.

Engadget have posted up some interesting hands-on videos of the HTC Desire Z and they're well worth a look. Of particular note is the incredibly quick boot time of the device, which is blazingly fast. Don't blink or you will miss it, and that's no exaggeration. Whether that speed is maintained after a few months of use remains to be seen, but it's impressive nonetheless.

The big news of the day is of course the HTC event in London where the company announced some new products and services. We'll be taking a more general look over the day's happening here, but make sure you check out our First look at the HTC Desire HD.
The day started not with HTC, but with Nokia. The Finns had sent down some people carrying red balloons to steal the limelight away from HTC. The stunt was an effort to advertise Nokia's Ovi Maps system with the balloons reading "I know where I'm going with Nokia's Ovi Maps". Childish? Yes. Effective? Well you're reading about it aren't you? It was just yesterday that Nokia were talking down Google Maps and today they're gate crashing HTC's party. Something tells us Nokia doesn't come away from this one looking edgy or smart though.
Anyway onto the meat as it were, the new products from HTC. The first to mention is of course the HTC Desire HD, which is basically a European version of the HTC EVO that has been available in America. The specs won't come as a surprise to many; 4.3" LCD screen, Snapdragon processor, 8 MP camera with dual flash, and support for 720p video recording. We have a hands on look at the device already published so go check it out for a more in-depth look.
The other handset of the day was the HTC Desire Z, which is a QWERTY slider effort. Specs wise it's not packing the same punch as the Desire HD, but is still a powerful beast nonetheless. You get a 5 MP camera with flash, support for HD video and the whole thing is powered by an 800 MHz processor. It's essentially a T-Mobile G2. Mind you though the Z does come with HTC's newly revamped SENSE UI and the associated services, which we'll get to in a moment. General release is expected around October for Asia and Europe and a little later for North America.
It wasn't just handsets that HTC was announcing today, they also let loose a new service for backing up and keeping track of your device. The new service revolves around HTCSense.com, which will provide the user with various services such as backing up their phone data and allowing remote operation of the handset. You can cause the handset to ring loudly and show its location (works when the handset is set to silent too) and you will also be able to lock and/or wipe your phone should it be lost or stolen. It sounds a bit like MobileMe, but that's no bad thing as that service does offer some very nice features to iPhone users.
