  O2 UK Adds Video Calling to iPhone Tariff    [ 05-03-2010 23:25 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's been easy to overlook the iPhone recently what with all the jazz that came out of MWC, but it's been bubbling under the surface as the next iteration is liekly only months away. One thing that has been popping up over the past few months is a reference to video calling, which it is now widely assumed the 4th generation Iphone will support. Lending further credence to those rumours O2 UK have updated their iPhone tariffs to include costs for video calls, which incidentally hey are pricing the same as normal calls. The iPhone SDK 3.2 included references to video calling so really this is just the latest push in that direction. It's also worth noting that O2 must think their network is up to scratch in terms of capacity if they are publicly touting iPhone video calls. Over the past year or so they have suffered a number of outages.

Sony Ericsson UK Chief Says 16 New Phones for 2010    [ 05-03-2010 18:30 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Mobile Today via SE-NSE     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Sony Ericsson's Managing Director for the UK & Ireland, Nathan Vautier, recently gave an interview to Mobile Today, a British industry publication, in which he revealed that Sony Ericsson, in the UK at least, would be offerring around 26 handsets this year. Now 10 of those handsets are apparently models from last year as is usually the case with most manufacturers. However, a good 16 or so will be new handsets, only some of which we have seen. There is the 'Fab 5' of course, the X10, Vivaz and their mini spawn that were unleashed at MWC. Mr Vautier said that a fe wof the unannounced handsets would be Walkman branded and would be priced somewhere in the £100 range. That means they're most likely to be in the mid-range of the market, an area where Sony Ericsson seems to be struggling at the moment, and it also means that the Walkman brand isn't going anywhere as some may have wondered after the introduction of devices in the Xperia range with their lack of Walkman and/or Cybershot branding.

Mr Vautier also addressed the issue of quality control, an area that Sony Ericsson has come in for numerous bad press reports over the past year or so. He made mention of a revised quality assurance procedure with a greater focus on ensuring that devices were up to scratch and also said that the components process had been streamlined so that fewer parts were being used. All in all the responses did feel as if he was taking the matter seriously, but there were too few specifics on how things are to be turned around.

You can read the full interview here.

Mobile phones have gottens maller and smaller over the years and even with the rise of large screened smartphone sover the past couple of years screen and input real estate is at a premium on many devices. Of course there are always people working on innovative, and often novel, means of interacting with devices and this is a great example. The sheer cool factor of this input method, what the researchers behind it call 'skinput', is pretty amazing. It's no doubt a few years away from commercial deployment, but imagine controlling your mobile like this! Check out the video:
