Quantum Tunnelling Enhanced Touchscreens    [ 10-02-2010 20:14 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Quantum Mechanics isn;t exactly the first thing you think of when someone talks about touchscreen technology, but one British company is applying quantum physics to create pressure-sensitive touchscreens. First the physics: spiky conducting nanoparticles (yes it does sound like something from Star Trek) are embedded in an insulating material and as the particles move closer together there is an increased probability that they will pass a charge to each other. The phenomenon is known as Quantum Tunnelling and essentially it means that as pressure on the touchscreen increases so does the electrical current.

So what does that mean in laymans terms? Well basically it gives rise to touchscreens that can tell how hard you press the screen, which can then be used for various effects. For example, pressing down hard might make scrolling faster and so on. The technology to do this can be as thin as a human hair and it's already been deployed by Samsung for use in nav buttons in certain smartphones.

Opera Mini for iPhone Unveiled Next Week    [ 10-02-2010 20:01 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Opera have previously said that a version of their popular mobile browser had already been developed for the iPhone and was in the process of going through the approval process, but after that we never heard about it again. Not surprising given that many expected it not to be approved. However, Opera have now announced they they will be unveiling Opera Mini for the iPhone at MWC. The main question here is 'what is the point'? Apple are very unlikely to approve the browser given that it will directly compete with their own Safari brower. Engadget are suggesting that the preview at MWC is more to draw attention to Opera as a whole, including other platforms like Symbian et al where Opera is available. It's as good a theory as any, unless Opera plan to take their browser underground so to speak and launch it through Cydia!
