HTC to release MID    [ 07-03-2008 19:14 ]

Digitimes.com has reported that High Tech Computer (HTC) is about to release its own mobile Internet device (MID). The device features phone functionality among other things and will come out to the market this year.

MID handsets based on x86 CPU and with respective software inside will be more productive than other ARM devices, said Michael Chen, chief of Intel Embedded Sales Group in Asia Pacific. He also added that MID sales would jump up, when Intel introduces a platform for the second generation MID (expected in 2009).

Universal abit has introduced protos of its two mobile Internet devices (MID) based on Centrino Atom (Menlow) platform at the CeBIT show. The first one is equipped with a slide-out QWERTY-keyboard, and the second MID has none. The source hasn’t provided any official details about them. According to HEXUS, the devices probably support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WiMAX and come with integrated GPS-receivers. Reportedly, the release date of Universal abit MID is set for the second half of this year. The models might come out under various brands, but there is no word on the price.

General Mobile has unveiled a wristwatch handset called GM500 at the CeBIT event. Currently this is a world smallest GSM-phone. It looks like ordinary watch with metallic strap, however it has a 1.5” OLED touchscreen instead of the clock-face. General Mobile GM500 will hit the stores in 2Q 08 at the recommended price of €599.
