Motorola's Q2 handset shipments to put them in fifth place?    [ 10-07-2008 23:25 ]

Author: Klimov Oleg   Source: digitimes     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

According to Digitimes, Motorola's handset shipments for the second quarter of this year will place them in fifth place, behind Nokia, Samsung, LG, and Sony Ericsson, in terms of marketshare. The total number of handsets shipped by Motorola will equate to approximately 22-23 million handsets, in comparison to 28.1 million from LG, and 24 million from Sony Ericsson. However, for the first quarter of the year, Motorola retained their fourth position, falling behind LG, but ahead of Sony Ericsson. However, all is not lost for Motorola, as their soon-to-debut five megapixel ZN5 cameraphone looks to lift Motorola off of their feet. Considering Motorola's tendency to produce below average cameraphone, the ZN5 is a very nice surprise indeed. The Kodak branding – they only produced applications for the ZN5, not the camera sensor itself, will hopefully promote the ZN5 to would-be-buyers, more than if it was Motorola alone, without Kodak. Not only does the ZN5 have a five megapixel camera, but also has Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 3.5 mm jack to boot. You can have a read of your comprehensive review of the ZN5 here

Apple's iPhone App Store to have 500 applications available at launch    [ 10-07-2008 22:40 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadgetmobile     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

By now, everyone should know that Apple's 3G iPhone will be launching in twenty two different countries, and with it will come the long-awaited version 2.0 firmware for the iPod Touch/iPhone, and the App Store, for both the Touch and iPhone. Five hundred applications will be available from the get-go, with 25% of those to be free of charge, and 90% to be priced $9.99 and under. Just like the version 2.0 firmware, Touch owners will have to pay for the App Store, and it will be free of charge to iPhone users. Also, a third of the first five hundred applications will be games.

Nine more companies join the non-profit Symbian Foundation    [ 10-07-2008 22:19 ]

Author: Klimov Oleg     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Symbian Foundation, owned by Nokia, has nowgot nine more companies on-board, which are: 3, América Móvil, TIM, Marvell, Aplix, EB, EMCC Software, Sasken and TietoEnator. This now brings the total of companies to nineteen, which include Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung. Since plans for the Symbian Foundation were announced, more than 150 organizations have registered their interest in joining via the website of the Foundation. Remember, because Nokia purchased the remaining shares of Symbian, then turned it into the non-profit Symbian Foundation, now there will be a unified Operating System – which won't be seen in handsets until around 2010, if not slightly later.
