Mozilla Mobile browser - more details available    [ 31-01-2008 23:57 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: http://www.news.com     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some of our past news items featured the impending Mozilla Mobile browser, which was being developed by the company, however no real facts had been out and about. Thankfully, some tidbits have made it to the Web - it turns out they already have two UI prototypes. The former is meant for devices with no touch-screen displays, and rather includes an on-screen pointer, so that the user can move about web pages via a conventional keypad.

The other UI is tweaked for handsets enjoying touch-sensitive screens, and allows for finger-based navigation without requiring you to hold a stylus pen, which is a buzzed ability these days.

Apart from that, both UIs support tabbed web-browsing, page scaling, and an array of other features making for easy and convenient browsing sessions on a mobile device's tiny screen. As the developers claim, their arch-goal is to get the mobile version of the browser as close to its desktop counterpart as possible. We'll see how  far they will go in this when the browser is released into the wild some time during the second half of 2008.

Purple Magic: low-end 3G phone on Linux    [ 31-01-2008 15:20 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Cellular News     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

NXP Semiconductors and Purple Labs have introduced a Linux-powered phone Purple Magic for 3G networks. The key advantage of it is the price – less than $100, while the average price tag for 3G handsets currently varies from $120 to $145. The developers believe the Purple Magic will become a mass Linux-device for 3G networks and enjoy particularly high demand in South East Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. To be more exact, the companies suggest that mobile vendors and operators take the model as the core for their own solutions. The phone is based on NXP Nexperia 7210 platform for 3G networks and Linux mobile version by Purple Labs.

Google Phone to be released?    [ 31-01-2008 08:43 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Cellular News     Translation by: Rytchkova Anja    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

We’ve got another portion of rumors about the so-called Google Phone. Reportedly, Google will announce the deal with Dell to release the own-brand device at Mobile World Congress. I’d remind you that the Google Phone had been speculated in the Internet for a pretty long time. Every now and then the rumors had been denied by the trusted sources and refreshed all over again. Last November the company launched a Linux open platform – Google Android. Then the company said it won’t announce the release of a mobile phone. That is we got neither a strong denial nor official confirmation of a Google Phone. Soon we’ll learn whether Dell would release a cell phone for Google.
