The phone belongs to the budget class for two reasons: low price and built-in tools to save on mobile bills. For example, it comes with Time and Cost Tracker, which interrupts the connection when the limit is over. In addition the device is packed in an anti-shock shell, its keys make a single block for extra protection. Nokia 1209 interface will be translated into 80 languages. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics look serious to win the high-end handset market. As a matter of fact, very often users prefer extended functionality and stylish design to the price. A spokesman of Samsung said the company plans to market over 50 million handsets priced above $200. The company expects to ship 200 million handsets in 2008 compared to 161.1 million units in 2007. Currently Samsung is the second largest vendor. However it shouldn’t forget the low-end segment for effective competition with Nokia. So it will introduce $40-50 handsets for the markets of Asia and South America.
Meanwhile LG also aims to up sales of high-end phones this year: 40 million units priced above $200. To achieve this figure the company will take some marketing steps. It targeted total phone shipments at 100 million units. LG is currently the 5th largest vendor. This year it expects to up the high-end share in the developing countries up to 50%.
