HTC set to begin shipping Android-based handsets by Q4    [ 01-08-2008 21:45 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As promised, HTC will begin shipping handsets, based on Google's Android Operating System, by the fourth quarter this year, said the company's CFO Hui-ming Cheng. The first of their Android-based handsets is expected to be the HTC Dream. The touchscreen market continues to grow at a fast rate, and this will only help HTC further in gaining more of the mobile phone marketshare. Their Windows Mobile-based Touch Diamond handset has been shipped to a significant number of network operators in many countries, so there's no reason why the first Android-based handsets shouldn't catch a number of operators attention too.

N-Gage service may be coming to gaming consoles    [ 01-08-2008 20:21 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: The Nokia Blog     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's N-Gage service could be coming to Sony's Playstation 3, and Microsoft's Xbox 360, says Nokia's Aki Jarvilehto. That is, N-Gage games could be ported to Microsoft's and Sony's online gaming networks – Xbox Live, and the Playstation network. So, essentially, users of the N-Gage service could play against those playing on the aforementioned gaming networks – broadening the amount of users to play against. What also could come of this, is that, you could play a game on your N-Gage-compatible handset, say, on public transport, for a few minutes, quit the game, and continue it on the PSN or Live network, when you return home. Currently, nothing is set in stone, so take this announcement for what it's worth.

Nokia slashes phone price, by up to 10%    [ 01-08-2008 16:11 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Seemingly, to try and out-do the competition (although such cuts have already become a routine duty for the Finnish manufacturer), Nokia has slashed some of its handset's prices, but up to 10%. Two of the biggest price cuts of Nokia's handsets are all music-focused handsets – the 5310, 5610, and, N81 (although, the N81 is partly multimedia-focused too). This seems to be a wise move, as, down the line, it will no doubt give Nokia a bigger percentage of the mobile phone market share, of which they own almost half – 41%, to be precise.

LG to equip higher-end handsets with Dolby Digital sound from Q4 onward    [ 01-08-2008 16:07 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwiredview     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Speakers in mobile phones are regarded as a novelty of sorts, obviously, due to their dimensions, they can't compete with Hi-Fi speakers, but, LG, along with Dolby Digital, look to come up with the second-best option. LG were the first manufacturer to release a handset to record videos at 120 FPS, in the DivX format, and, now, from the fourth quarter of this year onwards, LG's higher-end handsets will come equipped with sound systems from Dolby Digital. No models have been announced yet, but common sense says the first handset should be a pretty high-end touchscreen handset.

Sony's profit slumps by 47%, due to poor sales of mobile phone handsets    [ 01-08-2008 15:53 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: NYTimes     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Sony Ericsson have been in a slump of sorts recently, what with them issuing their second profit warning this year, attributed to less than stellar sales of mobile phones. On the Sony side of things, their quarterly profit fell by almost half – 47%, to be precise. Sony said it anticipated weak sales of its mobile phone handsets, as, recently, they have been facing stiff competition, from the likes of Nokia, and Samsung. Plus the global economic slowdown along with  yen's appreciation and higher fuel and raw materials prices also have had a hand in Sony's latest downfall, although most other Japanese exporters have felt the severe effects of the abovementioned factors too. Another factor could be attributed to the fact that the company has struggled to get some handsets to market on time – and even cancelling some – such as their Paris handset, which, by all accounts, was simply lackluster all-round – that could potentially make loyal customers lose faith in the company, resulting in a potential loss of sales.
