W-EDGE – universal standard    [ 03-03-2007 14:16 ]

Today most cellphones shipped to the countries with 3G networks come with the support of W-CDMA or UMTS technologies depending on the region. Usually the handsets are equipped with a GSM-module too and support GPRS. However almost none supports both 3G and EDGE – the companies rather offer two modifications of a model – for example, Sony Ericsson K790/K800.

At the recent 3GSM Congress 2007 many manufacturers introduced pioneer W-EDGE devices, so it’s just a mater of time when such cellphones will emerge. The new models are universal and can work in W-CDMA, EDGE, GSM and GPRS networks.

3G costing higher than WiMAX    [ 03-03-2007 13:51 ]

Currently many operators in different countries think over prospective technologies to choose. The right choice stands for the future of the company, that’s way many analysts are scrutinizing the prospects of this or that technology. According to the survey of Pyramid Research, mobile operators will spend less on WiMAX than on building a 3G network.

In some countries WiMAX frequency band is costing much less than 3G technology. Though this is a particular case, one should taking into account lots of factors from GDP per person to ARPU level. Anyway, WiMAX looks more attractive than 3G, well we are to witness an interesting fight of technologies.
